San Mateo, Calif., Nov. 20 - 22, 2009 Woodside and Portola Valley (Highway1, Skyline Boulevard)
This run has a little o everything — longast sweepers, tight, torturous and steepdownhill twisties, long highway stretchesand some smooth quick curves. BonnyDoon Road is a blast — well paved, goodcamber, and a gradual inclination up themountain. The transition to Pine Flat isnatural but looks wrong — just let theront wheel guide you. The sharp rightrom Empire Grade to Highway 236 cameup by surprise though, and or the rstquarter-mile we were sure we were onthe wrong road but could not nd a quickplace to turn around. We pretty much justused gravity going down this pockmarkedand steep road, letting second and thirddo most o the braking. Toward the bot-tom, the surace improved and we coulddrive the corners instead o ride aroundthem again. But the corners got snarky:the apexes became more triangular, anda couple o decreasing-radius curvespopped up in unexpected places. It wasslow through Big Basin, which was under-standable.
