FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT(RESEARCH)
Research impacts every aspect of our daily lives.ere are the immediate tangible benets suchas vaccines and new drugs, and improving themakeup of seeds so that farmers can producemore and higher quality crops that feed us.e less visible impacts of research includethe economic stimulus it provides to the localand national economies of countries around theworld. e skilled team members that form theresearch teams, the supplies and equipment, andsometimes new space that require construction, all provide the economic fuel for prosperity. Two new research team members that haverecently joined me in leading the research activi-ties of the University of Manitoba are Drs. Gary Glavin and Janice Ristock. ey assumed thepositions of Associate Vice-President (Research)and bring years of experience and expertise inmedical and social sciences research, respectively.e diversity of life is reected in the researchconducted at the University of Manitoba. In thisissue, you will nd many examples of this diver-sity. From immunologists working on cells at themicroscopic level seeking answers to diseases likeleukemia and breast cancer, to the impact thatdomestic violence has on women’s lives and thecreative work that is helping to mend the spiritsof Aboriginal female artists.I invite you to turn the pages and get a glimpseof what our researchers and students are doing tomake a dierence in lives around the world. —Digvir S. i wish more people had the courage the issue of domestic violence with the purpose of counseling and advocacy for the victims. I admire greatly the research being done in this area and hope it continues. we need to put a greater voice/discussion on this topic. people need to find those special people with whom they feel comfortable talking with about this sensitive topic.
