CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM
1993 Mitsubishi Diamante
1993 ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENTMitsubishi Cruise Control SystemsDiamante
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The cruise control system is electronically controlled andvacuum actuated. System components include a control unit, actuator, vacuum pump, cruise control switch, clutch pedal switch, cruiseindicator light, diode, inhibitor switch (A/T), stoplight switch, vehicle speed sensor and A/T control unit. The system also has self-diagnostic capability. Whenself-diagnostic mode is activated, each switch and sensor is checkedfor defects. Also when cruise control system has been canceled withoutusing a normal cancel method, a code will be set and stored in controlunit. Codes can be retrieved to help determine which circuit ismalfunctioning.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Before performing TROUBLE SHOOTING steps, inspect linkageassembly, actuator, cables and vacuum hoses. Ensure linkage and cablesmove smoothly. Ensure cables do not have excessive slack or tension.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
NOTE: For further trouble shooting information, see CHECK RESULTSCODES and SYMPTOM CHARTS. See Figs. 3-5.
SYSTEM CANCELS OR WILL NOT RESET AFTER CANCELLATION
1) Check trouble codes, see SELF-DIAGNOSTICS under DIAGNOSIS& TESTING. If no trouble codes are stored, check to see if cruisecontrol can be set.2) If cruise control can be set, system may have canceledbecause of driving on steep hills or loose wiring connection. Ifcruise control still cannot be set, perform SYSTEM INPUT TESTS underDIAGNOSIS & TESTING.3) If SYSTEM INPUT TESTS check okay, check actuator circuit.See TEST NO. 6 under CIRCUIT TESTS. If SYSTEM INPUT TESTS do not checkokay, see INPUT CODES
ADJUSTMENTS
CRUISE CONTROL CABLE
1) Ensure cruise control and accelerator cables are free ofbends and folds. Remove actuator cover. Loosen lock nut and adjustingnut "A" to free cables. See Fig. 1. Tighten adjusting nut "A" indirection that will reduce inner cable free play.2) Just when intermediate link "A" touches intermediate link"B", back off adjustment nut "A" one turn. Inner cable free playshould be 0-.04" (0-1 mm). Tighten lock nut. Press accelerator pedalto ensure intermediate links "A" and "B" operate smoothly. Installactuator cover.

DIAGNOSIS & TESTING
CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH FUNCTION TEST
NOTE: If vehicle speed decreases approximately 9 MPH below setspeed, set speed will be canceled.1) Cruise control switch is mounted on steering column. Tooperate cruise control system, turn ignition on. Turn main cruisecontrol switch to ON position. Ensure switch indicator light comes on.NOTE: Speed will not set beyond system limit of 90 MPH.2) Drive vehicle between 25 and 90 MPH. Move cruise controlswitch lever to SET position. Vehicle speed should stay at set speed. To increase set speed, turn control switch to Resume (RES) positionand hold until new set speed is reached.3) To lower set speed, press SET button and hold until newset speed is reached. To return to set speed after cancellation, moveRES switch from ON to OFF position. Vehicle speed should return toprevious setting before cancellation. Set speed should cancel when anyof the following occur:* Brake pedal is pressed.* Cancel switch is activated.

* Transmission is shifted to Neutral or Park.* Cruise control main switch is turned to OFF position.* Ignition switch is turned to OFF position.
SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
1) Self-diagnostics should be performed when cruise controlcancels without the driver using normal cancel modes. Data LinkConnector (DLC) is located on right side of fuse box.2) Use analog voltmeter or Scan Tester (MB991341) for coderetrieval. Use scan tester according to operating instructionsprovided with tester. Connect leads of analog voltmeter between cruisecontrol terminal and ground terminal of DLC. See Fig. 2.Fig. 2: Data Link Connector Terminal IDCourtesy of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America3) Read voltmeter needle sweeps to determine trouble code.Once trouble codes have been displayed, see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC CODES tofind appropriate circuit test.4) To clear trouble codes, either disconnect battery cable orturn ignition on. Turn main cruise control switch and set switch to ONposition, and, within one second, turn RES switch to ON position.5) Depress brake pedal and hold cruise control switch in ONposition for more than 5 seconds. Verify codes are cleared.
