SETTLERS
• In 383 the roman
legions had to

concentrate at the

this situation let
the Picts and Scots
invade Britain.

• In 383 the roman legions left Britain and went to Gaul


(France).

• Because, Barbarian had invaded the Roman Empire. (CAUSE)


• In 407 there weren’t Roman soldiers to defend Britain from
the Picts and Scots. (CONSEQUENCE)
• Britain asked for help to Anglo-Saxons, they came to Britain.

• When Anglo-Saxons arrived
they stayed in Britain

• At time passed more Anglo-Saxons arrived. They attacked


Britons and stayed here.
CHRISTIANITY
• The Anglo-Saxons were pagans. But
the Celts, who were Christians,
gradually returned to England and
Scotland from Ireland and Wales and
began to convert the Picts, Scots and
Anglo-Saxons to their religion.
ALFRED THE GREAT
• In 871, Alfred became
king of Wessex. Soon
the Vikings attacked his
kingdom and he started
to prepare an army
which defeated
Guthrum, the Vikings
king, at Edington battle.
The Viking surrendered.
ENGLAND AFTER ALFRED

• After 30 years of Alfred’s death England was in


peace. Three kings made this situation possible.
They were Alfred’s son, Edward and Athelstan.
• King Edgar decided to build monasteries to
spread the peace to all the kingdom.
STRUGGLE FOR THE
THRONE
• Edward the confessor died without any
descendant. Three men claimed the right to
be the next king:
• William, duke of Normandy (Edward’s
cousin)
• Harald Hardrada, king of Norway (He
wanted to join England to his own kingdom)
• Harold, Earl of Wessex (The most powerful
anglo-saxon in England)
HAROLD AND WILLIAM
• Harold was crowned by an
archibishop. William felt
cheated and decided to
invade england. The weather
was bad and his ship were
delayed. Later Harald
invaded Northern England.
Harold defeated Harald at
the battle of Stamford
Bridge. William waited for
Harold. Harold marched to
the south. In October Harold
and his army reached
Hastings.

THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS
• The battle started at
nine o’clock,14th
October 1066 and the
warriors fought on the
top of a mountain.
When the Normans
were shooting arrows at
the English, Harold died.
and William marched to
London burning all the
buildings. The city with
no king and no army to
defend it, surrendered.
THE CRUSADES

• Richard I (one of William’s


descendants) was
interested in fighting in the
Holy Land.
• This land had been
captured by the Turks in
1070.
• The Pope ordered all
Christians to invade the
Holy Land. All knights from
Europe fought, but it
wasn’t conquered until
1190 on a crusade by
Richard I.
