Sri Jaya Devanka Baisi Pahacha

SRI JAYADEVANKA BAAISI PAHACHA
(The Twenty-two stairs to Sri Jagannatha created by Sri Jaya Dev, the love lyricist.)

About the book:
Sri Jaya Dev of the 12th Century Orissa, erroneously depicted as Sri Jayadev or Jayadeva, was not a Baishnav as he is being projected; he was a social revolutionary and proponent of Sahajajana sect of Buddhism. He had authored his love lyrics to provide a supportive literature to this cult which was essential in his time to check spread of Brahminic aparthied in his motherland Orissa.

The lyrics having immense Sahajia impact and being matchlessly popular, different agents of Brahminism, in course of time, had tried to transform them into Brahminic literature through interpolations and by editing them in a style conducive to their own cult and by captioning the interpolated compilation as Gita-Govinda when, in fact, the poet was so much against the cult of Govinda that he had never used that name even for once in his lyrics. His lyrics supporting the female factor in consonance with Sahajayana were so much threatening to patriarchal political system that they were banned from the temple of Lord Jagannath by the great patron of Brahminism in Orissa, Emporer Purushottam Dev. The Emperor had replaced the lyrics of Jaya Dev with a book captioned as Abhinav Gita-Govinda of which he had claimed to be the author; but which was allegedly authored by a Brahmin namely Dibakara Mishra wherein attempts were tactfully made to transform Sri Jagannath from Buddha of Orissa to Krishna of Dwaraka in order to terminate the Buddhist flow of philosophy till then active in his abode, Sri Mandira.

People of Orissa had revolted against this conspiracy and had compelled the said Emporer to withdraw his own order and work and to restore recital of the lyrics of Sri Jaya Dev before the Lord as before. Purusottam Dev withdrew his work but the selected Brahminic interpolations continued in the guise of orders of the Lord in dreams. Agitation of the public could somehow be managed with his son and successor Emporer Prataprudradev promulgating an ordinance to the effect that no other song than that of Sri Jaya Dev would ever be recited in the temple. Unable to write off the Buddhist impacts of this revolutionary poet, Brahminism in Orissa has interpolated 72 verses on his original works and given it a misleading title called Gita Govinda, editing the same in a style to usurp him for Brahminic Vaishnavism. The Bengalis, without knowing the truth on Jaya Dev, have joined the bandwagon of claiming him for Vaishnavism as well as for their homeland. In the process, the immortal love lyricist has been buried under baseless legends.

Sri Pattanayak has freed him from the labyrinth of legends and set him as history permits. He has shown how both the segments, the chauvinist section of the Bengalis and the agents of Brahminism are wrong in their claim over Sri Jaya Dev. He has done a unique work. He has completely dismantled the fort of Bengali claims over Sri Jaya Dev. He has, for the first time, exposed how the Central Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi has been misused by Bengali chauvinists in the matter of Sri Jaya Dev. He has, for the first time, freed Sri Jaya Dev from legends on the basis of historic perspectives. He has brought to records all the relevant but missing episodes of Orissan history for the first time through interpretative research. He has shown how Radha, now a Hindu Vaishnav deity, was created by Sri Jaya Dev as Nayika of Buddhist Sahajayan. He has shown how Orissa is the place where Buddha was born. He has shown how Buddha became Sri Jagannatha. He has shown how Sri Jagannatha is in reality the female factor. He has opened up new avenues for research on the now extinct Mahodadhi Civilisation of Orissa. He has opened up new vistas for research on extinguishment of Buddhism in the soil of its origin, Orissa, vis-a-vis the the role of Asoka. Over and above the most perspicacious discussion on Sri Jaya De

I agree with Dr. Binoy Kumar Mohanty that this book is a very dangerous book. It poses a dangerous challenge to those who in the name of religion want to keep the people away from knowing the reality of sociological evolution of their culture.

This book carries sufficient documentary evidence that can convincingly dismantle the age-old popular belief that Sri Jaydev was a Vishnav saint and he had authored Geet Govind.

Sri Pattanayak has proved beyond all doubts that Sri Jaydev was out and out against the cult of Govind and hence it was not possible on his part to give the title “Geet Govind” to his love songs.

In fact, Sri Pattanayak has, for the first time, shown that the love songs Sri Jaydev had written were so written in order only to give literatural support to Buddhist Sahajayan. And, therefore, agents of Vedic Brahminism had tampered with these songs and interpolated on them many stanzas in order to show them as Vaisnav literature. They had created many legends about Jaydev to mislead the people, Sri Pattanayak has shown in this book.

Sri Pattanayak has cited the instance of Oriya peoples’ rebellion against emperor Purusottam Dev as, hand in glove with the Brahmins, he had discarded Sri Jaydev’s lyrics from ritual status in Sri Jagannath’s temple as a proof of the songs being Buddhists songs and Jaydev being a Buddhist poet.

The world has now no doubt that the Bengali claim over Jaydev is a false claim because Jaydev has been proved to be a son of Orissa. But Sri Pattanayak has not limited himself to show how the Bengali claim is false; he has gone ahead to expose how the falsehood was deliberate.

From any angle, this book is unique. If you do not like to agree with what this book says, like me, you will also find it impossible to disagree with what he has said.

As for example this book has shown that the image of Sri Jagannath is nothing but the image of a female torso. For a believer like me it was difficult to accept this argument. But as I proceeded with the book, I started believing that perhaps Sri Pattanayak is correct and perhaps blind belief was hindering my acceptance of his arguments in the initial stage. On completion of the book, it looks more convincing that Sri Jagannath represents the perception of female factor as the basic source of creation and Sri Jaydev’s Asthapadies are mystic songs of Buddhism written in Oriyanised Sanskrit. In fact, in the book Sri Pattanayak has discussed on Tantric significance of Astha and linking that significance to corresponding stages of love has shown how Sri Jaydev’s Asthapadi lyrics are depiction of female centric love that Bauddha Tantra stood for.

I think it is a must read for every Oriya to know his / her correct cultural heritage.

I am thankful to Dr.Abhinna Sahoo for having first informed me about this book.

I had read the print version of this book. It is a wonderful book. It has given new light on Sri Jagannath and Lord Buddha. It has analyzed how the poet of Geet Govind Sri Jaydev had contributed to Bauddha Sahajayan by writing his Astapadi poems. Translation of the poems of Jaydev from Sanskrit to Oriya in poetic form by the author of this book is very helpful to understand the discussion done on Sri jaydev.
I am very happy seeing the book in internet through orissamatters.com and through this popular site. Scholars specifically Oriya people living in foreign countries will now know what they have not known yet on Orissa's history and culture.

This is a dangerous book. It challenges age old beliefs.
We have believed so far that Sri Jaydev is a Hindu Vaisnav poet. But the author Sri Subhas Chandra Pattanayak has proved in this book that Sri jaydev was a Sahajayani Buddhist and he had composed his love lyrics (Astapadi poems) to provide Sahajayan with a popular literature. Sri Pattanayak has done it so convincingly and on such powerful proofs that after reading the book I am inclined to believe that Sri Jaydev was not a Hindu vaisnav but a Sahajayani Buddhist.

Sri Pattanayak has shown that Sri Jaydev had not authored Geet Govind. According to him, agents of Brahminism had interpolated many verses in the works of Jaydev and edited the interpolated version decorating the same with a Vaisnav title like Geet Govind with a motive to usurp Sri jaydev for Hinduism.

I feel, it deserves serious attention from researchers.

The book challenges our belief, but it is a book that cannot be ignored.

Author of this book, Subhas Chandra Pattanayak is highly reputed in this part of the globe as an investigative journalist. He is known for his well researched fearless reports on administration; but he is also regarded as an excellent interpreter of Orissa's unique culture vis-a-vis scriptures and history.

The present book is one of his great contributions to culture and literature. It has corrected a lot of wrong in Orissa's cultural history. In this book he has thrown new light on the beginning and progress of the Cult of Sri Jagannatha and shown how Buddha, founder of Buddhism, being born in Orissa, became Sri Jagannatha as per perception of Buddhist Vajrayana and how Vedic activists having invaded Orissa have tried to convert Sri Jagannatha from Buddha of Orissa to Krishna of Dwaraka in order to destroy Oriya culture, which was basically Buddhist culture. And, in the process, the author has shown how Sri Jaydev has been projected as a Hindu Vaisnav even though he was a Buddhist who had composed his love lyrics to strengthen the Sahajayan school of Buddhism with a supportive literature.

Sri Pattanayak has not only dismantled all false claims of Bengalis on Sri Jaydev and proved how the poet was born in Orissa and was an Oriya, but also exposed the hitherto unexposed intention of a section of Bengalis in wrongfully claiming Sri Jaydev for Bengal.

Sri Pattanayak deserves all the thanks for throwing for the first time authentic light on how Radha, the core character in Sri Jaydev's Asthapadi lyrics was created by the poet himself in order to popularize his philosophy of Buddhist Sahajayana and how from Orissa alone she has spread over other parts of India and adopted by Hindus.

Pattanay ak has thrown absolutely new but thoroughly authentic light on the birthplace of Sri jaydev, which according to his interpretation of ancient literary works, corresponds to the area where stands now a temple of Vilweswar near Puri and has shown how some of Oriya scholars are wrong in projecting a place near Bhubaneswar as his birthplace.

The translation of the lyrics of Sri Jaydev done in Oriya language by Subhasji is superb and perhaps nothing better than that could ever been done by any. I only wish, had the book been written in English too!

However, I thank Saswat for having kindly posted it in the internet and in this lovely site.

It is perhaps the most enlightening book on Orissa's political as well as cultural history. Bengalis' false claim over Sri Jaya Dev has been most authentically countered in this book and the greatest love lyricist of India has been freed from misleading legends willfully created by Hindu Vaisnavism to misappropriate him into its own fold and has been correctly shown as the matchless bard of the Sahajayana school of Buddhism in this exemplary work of research presented by Sri Subhas Chandra Pattanayak to the world of culture. When an incisive journalist like him decides to look into culture and literature, such a book, uniquely enlightening comes out.
It is a very welcome posting in the internet and I am sure, scholars would be immensely benefited by this.
