THE BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND
is anindependent private foundation dedicated to advancing the biomedicalsciences by supporting research and other scientific and educationalactivities. Within this broad mission, BWF seeks to accomplish twoprimary goals—to help scientists early in their careers develop asindependent investigators, and to advance fields in the basic biomedicalsciences that are undervalued or in need of particular encouragement.BWF’s financial support is channeled primarily through competitivepeer-reviewed award programs, which encompass six major categories:biomedical sciences, infectious diseases, interfaces in science, popu-lation sciences, translational research, and science education. BWFmakes grants primarily to degree-granting institutions in the U.S. andCanada on behalf of individual researchers, who must be nominated bytheir institutions. To complementthese competitive award programs,BWF also makes grants to nonprofit organizations conducting activitiesintended to improve the general environment for science.Governed by a Board of Directors composed of distinguishedscientists and business leaders, BWF was founded in 1955 as thecorporate foundation of the pharmaceutical firm Burroughs WellcomeCo. In 1993, a generous gift from BWF’s sister philanthropy in theUnited Kingdom, the Wellcome Trust, enabled BWF to become fullyindependent from the company, which was acquired by Glaxo in 1995.BWF has no affiliation with any corporation.
