Greek Fire Fighter Shines@ John Jay 
Protection Management Program trainsInternational Firefghters
Konstantinos Ziogas is one o the Greek frefghters who came to John Jay asan international student in the Fall 2008 semester. Ziogas joined the GreekFire Brigade in 2001 and graduated rom the Ofcers School o the GreekFire Academy in 2002. He served or three years in the special unit or di-saster relie (EMAK) and during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Ziogaswas a member o the unit responsible or handling Radiological, Biologicaland Chemical incidents. He successully completed the Master o Science inProtection Management in Fall 2009.Ziogas said that the Protection ManagementProgram was a challenging but ruitul expe-rience. He explained, “The PMT degree gaveme an opportunity to expand and enhancemy knowledge in the emergency and protec-tion management feld.” He acknowledgedthat he could not have completed the degreewithin a year without the help and the exper-tise o his proessors and the support o theCollege’s proessional sta.Ziogas made the most o his brie stay at John Jay. In summer 2009, heparticipated in a study abroad program in the Dominican Republic (DR). Theprogram included visits to prisons to study the DR incarceration system, howeective it is and what conditions exist at prisons. In the Fall 2009 semester,Ziogas interned at the Ofce o the United Nations High Commissioner orReugees, a very competitive and selective internship. He worked on such is-sues as strengthening the coordination o the United Nations emergency andinternational cooperation on humanitarian assistance in natural disasters.Upon his return to Greece, Ziogas hopes to apply the knowledge and skillsgained at John Jay to help the Greek Fire Department conront the growing
challenges o the uture by meeting both Greek and European standards.
 First Recipient of Homeland Security Scholarship Excels
Katharine Boyd was the frst recipient o theHomeland Security Assistantship in 2008. Shegraduated rom John Jay in May 2009 with aMaster o Arts in Forensic Psychology. During hertenure at John Jay, she was a consistent Dean’sList recipient. Presently, she is in the doctoralprogram pursuing a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice.Her research interests are political and religiousviolence in relation to policy.As a recipient o the Homeland Security Assistantship, Boyd worked withsuch notable researchers as Dr. Scott Atran and Dr. Itai Sneh, and at theCenter on Terrorism with Dr. Charles B. Strozier. Her research with Dr. Atranwas an open-source research project on jihad networks or the John Jay andARTIS Transnational Terrorism (JJATT) database. Her research with Dr. Snehcontributed to his book titled
History Will Judge: An Examination of Torture through the Ages.
Boyd also co-authored chapters in the
Fundamentalist Mindset: Psy-chological Reections on Religion, Violence and History 
[OxordUniversity Press] with Charles B. Strozier. She served as the editorial as-sistant or the book, edited by Strozier with David M. Terman and James W.Jones. It is scheduled or publication by Oxord University Press in March2010. Ms. Boyd also served as transcript editor or the conerence
Nuclear Weapons After Bush: Prospects for Abolition.
In the summer 2009,Boyd conducted open-source research on Al-Qa’ida in Iraq or the PoliticalOrganizations Database at START at the University o Maryland.Boyd strongly believes that the Homeland Security Assistantship has been oenormous value to her and the other recipients o the award. She especiallyvalues the mentoring she received rom the researchers at John Jay. Shestated that the contacts she made during her time as a Graduate Assistant-ship with the Homeland Security Program have placed her in a position tomake valuable contacts or her uture career. She is deeply humbled by theopportunities which she has received because o the Assistantship.

reports on someo our extraordinary students and acultymembers. It reects their rich diversityand the international scope o their inter-ests and activities. It spotlights many othe thought provoking recent events andinitiatives and outstanding experiences that enrich graduate study at John Jayand make it so exceptional. The coming semester promises to oer anotherlively mix o opportunities or academic, proessional and personal growth.As usual, there are many things brewing at the College this Spring that willsupport the continued growth and development o graduate studies. It will bean exciting and challenging semester as the College embarks on a three-old journey requiring sel examination, assessment, and planning or both graduateand undergraduate studies. The College will simultaneously shape a MasterPlan or the next 5 years to take the College to its 50th anniversary in 2014;pursue a plan to enhance student retention and success; and begin the periodicreview leading to reaccreditation o the College by the Middle States Commis-sion on Higher Education. These endeavors will have a critical impact on theuture o the College. I hope that the voices o graduate students will make animportant contribution.
 International Scholar leads New Program
Rosemary Barberet, an Associate Proessor in the Sociology Department ledthe aculty group that developed the International Crime and Justice MAprogram. She is extremely well qualifed to serve as the interim director othis new program. Dr. Barberet currently teaches a variety o courses in theCollege´s undergraduate major in International Criminal Justice. She is a nativeo Connecticut and trained in criminology in the United States (PhD, Universityo Maryland), but, she has spent most o her academic career in Europe (Spainand England), where she taught mainly graduate courses, and directed theM.Sc. in Criminal Justice Program at the University o Leicester, UK.Dr. Barberet’s publications and research interestsare ocused on sel-reported youth crime, violenceagainst women, business crime, ear o crime, uni-versity student victimization, crime indicators andcomparative methodology. From 2001 to 2005,she chaired the International Division o the Ameri-can Society o Criminology. Fluent in Spanish andFrench, she is actively involved in a number o crimi-nology associations around the world. She repre-sents the International Sociological Association atthe United Nations. Dr. Barberet has been awarded the Herbert Bloch Awardo the American Society o Criminology or service to the society and to theproessional interests o criminology, as well as the Raael Salillas Award o theSociedad Española de Investigación Criminológica.
 New Program Director in Protection Management 
Robert Till succeeds Norman Groner as Directoro the Protection Management MS Program thisSpring 2010. Till is an Associate Proessor involvedin teaching and research in fre science. He is alsoa licensed proessional engineer in the state oConnecticut Dr. Till received his PHD in Fire Pro-tection Engineering rom Worcester PolytechnicInstitute [WPI] in 2001. His thesis addressed theevaluation o buildings or fre department inter-vention.Dr. Till’s interests include the protection o transport inrastructure projectsincluding road and rail tunnels, bridges and airports.  Interns Make A Splash OnTe National Stage

Ms. Alyxaundria Sanord a native o Cleveland Ohio is making it big in the citythat never sleeps. As a graduate student enrolled in the Criminal Justice Pro-gram with a specialization in Investigative Techniques, Alyxaundria has takenadvantage o the college’s graduate career placement by securing a covetedpaid internship working at ABC-TV—Disney Television Group on the
Good Morning America
Weekend and the Brian Ross Investigative Unit.As a graduate level intern, Alyxaundria works as a producer’s assistant and isheavily involved in the television production work or both shows. She worksin the feld, transcribes interviews, and conducts the “man on the street” in-terviews. At ABC’s Brian Ross Investigative Unit, Alyxaundria has conductedresearch or the Fort Hood incident and stories concerning the inamous BernieMado. She has participated in stakeouts and is most excited to be working inthe feld and seeing how television shows are produced. When asked about theco-mingling o journalism and criminal investigations Alyxaundria said, “As aninvestigator, I conduct research and I am on an investigative team. It requirestaking initiative and thinking outside o the box by exhausting all options.”What’s in Alyxaundria’s uture? She will continue her studies in criminal justiceand while working on a number o projects at ABC that are currently in pre-production. She ended the interview by saying, “I am excited to still work inthe media industry while pursuing my Masters in Criminal Justice at John JayCollege. Both the felds o media and criminal justice can work well togetheras a career option.” Next semester Alyxaundria will be interning with ABC’s“The View.” 
In Good Hands—Interning with Disaster Operations
Andrew William Jeremy Moss, a graduatestudent enrolled in the Master’s in Public Ad-ministration Program , is currently working asan Emergency Management Graduate Internwith the Federal Emergency ManagementAgency (FEMA) in the Disaster OperationsDivision.In this challenging internship Andrew assistsin the preparation o FEMA emergency plansand procedures and participates during di-saster response operations. He also provides assistance in the evaluation oexercises at the national and state levels.Andrew is responsible or monitoring and evaluating H1N1 activities bothdomestically and internationally and is serving as a H1N1 specialist. He ciphersthrough a wide range o complex materials or interpretation and analysis andsupports FEMA’s critical all hazard mission by carrying out reporting activities.
Update on Library Services
Starting this spring semester, the Lloyd Sealy Library is implementing a new andimproved interlibrary loan system.
The purpose of Interlibrary Loan is toretrieve materials that are not available at the John Jay Library or atany other CUNY school.
This new system, called ILLiad, requires patrons tolog into their own, personal interlibrary loan account. From this account, youcan submit requests or books and articles, keep track o your requests, receiveelectronic documents, and request renewals. Interlibrary loan is available to allJohn Jay graduate students. You can request books, articles and other docu-ments that cannot be obtained through CLICS (CUNY Libraries Inter-CampusServices).
