and Communication Technology
The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
has experienced very rapid progress approaching the third millennium.
This development can be especially seen in the use of various physical
media such as audiovisual, videotapes which then developed into inter-
active video, satellite, and internet.
“Today, the world becomes flat. As the world
changes in line with changes in human life,”said
Dr. Alek, li-nguistics lecturer in Faculty of Edu-
cation and Teaching in an international semi-
nar entitled “Utilizing Information and Commu-
nication Technology” in Learning Indonesian
Language which was held by Department of
Language Education and Literature of Indone-
sia in the Hall of Student Center on Saturday,
(5/12). This seminar was attended by a num-
ber of teachers of primary schools, junior and
senior high schools in Jabodetabek area.
Alek also explained, learning in school or
university level which has begun to utilize ICT
at least have some purposes, such as giving
clarity of materials, conveying information,
completing the tasks using a computer quick-
ly and automatically, and being supplementary
learning resources.
“But users should also pay attention to its
suitability, effectivity, efficiency, and whether it
still provide the accurate information in teach-
ing and learning activities,” he said.
Furthermore, Alek further explained about
the definition of learning technology which was
stated by Information Technology Association
of America (ITAA), Association of Educational
Communication Technology (AECT), namely
the theory and practice of design, develop-
ment, utilization, management, and evaluation
of processes and learning resources.
“The theory means the covering of con-
cept, constructions, principles, and proposi-
tions that contribute to the torso of science,”
said Alek. While the practice involving the ap-
plication of science in solving problems.

Rebecca Bataglini, a teacher of Indone-
sian language in Australia also said the similar
thing. She said the students in Australia has
started to use ICT in their learning activities.
She recognizes that the utilization of ICT could
help the students in understanding the mate-
rial presented to them.
“The use of ICT also can be a trick to
make the students not get bored in studying.
So they can understand the lesson that we
teach,” explained Rebecca who now teaches
at Melrose High School in Canberra, Austra-
lia.
Through ITC, Rebecca continued, students
also able to download some materials that are
not written down in their text book. Parents
are also able to find out their child’s develop-
ment.
Rebecca said the students in
Australia has started to use ICT
in their learning activities. She
re-cognizes that the utilization
of ICT could help the students
in understanding the material
presented to them
“There are many benefits to us—as teach-
ers—to learning the use of ICT. It provides
Power Point, videos, music, internet, and
games,” said Rebecca who has been an Indo-

Quraish Shihab
Get Lifetime
Achievement Award
The expert of tafsir Prof Dr M Quraish
Shihab received the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the Faculty of Ushuluddin. The
appreciation coincides with the celebra-
tion of Faculty of Ushuluddin’s 47th anni-
versary in the Main Auditorium, Thursday
(12/11).
The program with the theme “Tribute
to Quraish Shihab” was organized by the
Faculty of Ushuluddin Faculty’s gratitude
on Quraish Shihab’s service in helping for-
ward the Faculty’s improvement particu-
larly Tafsir Hadist. “This appreciation was
given to Quraish Shihab on all of his ser-
vices in developing the Faculty of Ushulud-
din,” said the Dean Faculty of Ushuluddin
Dr amin Nurdin MA.
The celebration became more special
with the presence of two former Presi-
dents of the Republic of Indonesia, namely
BJ Habibie (the third president) and KH Ab-
durrahman Wahid (the fourth President).

Rector Prof Dr Komaruddin Hidayat said
entering the new year every human being
should reflect on things that he or she has
ever done during the year. In Islam, there
is a term Muhasabah or self reflection of
what a person has ever done.
“We should continue carrying out
good deeds and not repeat the mistakes
that we have done. Thus, both science
and charities are elements that we must
posses entering the new year, said the
Rector during a speech at the Republika
National Dzikir in Masjid Agung at-Tin TMII,
on Thurday (31/12)
In the dzikir that was led by Ustadz
Muhammad Arifin Ilham, prominent figures
such as Islamic Dirjen Bimas Prof Dr
Nasaruddin Umar, novelist Habiburrahman
El Shiarz, Members of the Regional
Representative Council (DPD) AM Fatwa,
Habib Ahmad al-Kaf, and Pertamina
Director Waluyo were present.
The Rector explained, maintaining faith
is also an important part of life. If faith is
compared with wealth and knowledge, the
later do not have any meaning. “Because
wealth and knowledge are relative, so we
should be grateful and also preserve the
faith in us,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rector also reminded
the importance to always be grateful. He
considered that a thankful person will not
feel envious or hasud to others. He or she
will be grateful with everything he or she
receives whether it is something trivial or
great.
“It will determine whether the formation
of faith will be strong or weak,” said the

Indonesia-New Zealand Need
to Cooperate in Maritime Sector
The Director of Centre for Strategic Studies:
New Zealand Victoria University of Wellington,
Prof Peter Cozens, said, it is essential that In-
donesia and New Zealand Government cooper-
ate in maritime field in order to preserve Pacific
Ocean marine environment.
“In order to replenish and sustain our knowl-
edge base, it is necessary to generate new
knowledge about the Oceans on which our way
of life depends,” said Cozens in general lecture
of “New Zealand and Southeast Asia: Coopera-
tion and Partnership for the Security of Asia Pa-
sific” held by the Program of International Rela-
tion (HI) Faculty of Social and Political Science
(FISIP) in Diorama Room, Thursday (19/11).
The U.S. Committed to Help Disaster
Management in Indonesia
The envoy of the United States Political Advi-
sor Darcy F. Zotter said that the U.S. has great
attention to the disaster in Indonesia. This is
evidenced by the construction of a hospital in
Padang.
The statement was made by Zotter when
delivering a public lecture themed Foreign Poli-
cy of President Obama in front of the Academic
Faculty of Da’wa and Communication (FDK), in
FDK building, Wednesday (6/10). The Dean of
FDK Dr Arief Subhan MA and a number of lectur-
ers attended the event.
The related hospital can accommodate
300 to 400 patients a day. This is made possi-
ble by the aid of US$ 7 million from the U.S gov-
ernment. The assistance included generators
and medicines which are distributed through
the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).
The professor expected the students to be
aware of the condition of Pacific Ocean that is
getting worse by the day. Whereas, Pacific
Ocean is a largest Ocean in the world and it
is part of Indonesia and New Zealand that has
large influence in marine ecosystems.
“Educating and training people within the
region is the best strategy for ensuring the con-
tinuity of marine understanding and replenish-
ment of knowledge,” he added.
Besides Cozen, the two-hour public lecture
was also attended by Prof Roberto Rabel from
the same university and two delegations from
New Zealand Embassy, James Waite and Katie

US$ 300 thousand to government organizations
to provide clean water, sanitation and shelters
in the quake area.
Besides conveying about the commitment
to the disaster, Darcy also elaborated U.S for-
eign policies under Obama. Among the policies
are closing of the prison in Guantanamo, review-
ing detention and interrogation policies and also
prohibiting torture. Related to the environment,
the U.S. has a commitment to tackle climate
change issues.
Other policies announced are plans to end
the war in Iraq, a strategy to communicate an
international nuclear threat, the effort of building
a new dialogue in economy between America
and China, and the announcement of new poli-
cies with Cuba, North Korea, and Burma. (Elly)

Postgraduate Opened
English Education Program.
After opening the Postgraduate of Agri-
business, Postgraduate Program or Sekolah
Pascasarjana (SPs) has opened a new study
program of English Education for Postgradu-
ate Program. This Postgraduate program
of English Education was opened after SPs
acquired the Permit from General Director
English Education of Religion Department
through SK General Director Pendis Number
DJ.I/678/2009 November 9th, 2009 along
with recommendation from General Director
of Institute of National Education Department
Number 1950/D/T/2009, October 30th,
2009.
According to Deputy Director of Institution-
al Development SPs Prof Dr Suwito, the enroll-
ment of new student English education will
commenced in the beginning of January 2010,
the selection will be conducted in February and
11 Activists of LOI Bangladesh Visited UIN
As many as 11 activists from Leaders of In-
fluence (LOI) Bangladesh visited UIN campus.
The group comprises of people from diverse
professions such as secretary, officials,
imam, reporters and feminism activists. The
visit which was held by the cooperation of
The Asia Foundation (TAF) Bangladesh and
International Center for Islam and Pluralism
(ICIP) was carried out to acquire information
and as a way to exchange experiences in
terms of development of Islam in Indonesia
with Muslim NGO’s community in Jakarta

informal gathering and exchanging informa-
tion and experience with UIN officials.” Said

UIN Jakarta Attended International
Conference of Asian Philosopher’s Association
Forty UIN Jakarta students attended the
fourth International Conference of Asian Phi-
losopher Association held in Wisma Makara,
Universitas Indonesia which was organized
by Asian philosopher Association on Monday
(04/11).
Prof. Dr. Choi Woo-Won, President of the
General Association of Asian philosopher, and
Prof. Sunardji, from the University of Indone-
sia opened this conference. Besides being a
participant, UIN Jakarta also was also one of
the organizers from the series of activities:
the Turkish Art, Music and Calligraphy Perfor-
mance on Friday (06/11).

“After the opening many general study
programs in the Bachelor or strata-1 program,
SPs also needs to open the general study pro-
gram although still only in the postgraduate de-
gree. As for doctoral program, it will be done
step by step based on the requirements,” he
said in SPs Building, Wednesday, November
18th, 2009.
Postgraduate School (SPs) in 2009 is pro-
cessing the opening of seven common study
programs for postgraduate program. Other
five study programs that will be opened soon
is Information Technique, Information System,
Psychology, Accounting and Management.
“The license requirements for those five
study programs have been approved. So, we
just have to wait it,” said the former Staff Rec-
tor of Institutional Development.

Besides visiting the campus, the activists
also visited a number of da’wa and other edu-
cational institutions in Jakarta.
Several themes were discussed, among
others were Disclosure of Civilization of Asian
Community, Human Rights and Democracy in
Asia Society, and the Philosophy of Commu-
nity Alteration in Asia. All of these themes are
proposed to create solidarity among human
civilization.

of Asian Philosopher in cooperation with the
Daedong Philosophical Association, Pusan
State University of Japan, Korea, Fatih, Tur-
key, Kazakhstan, Kobe, Süleyman Demirel

PP Muhammadiyah) and Dr Hj Tuty alawi-
yah (the former Minister of Woman’s role)
were also present .
The Director of Mizan Publishing Dr
Haidar Bagir said, Quraish Shihab is one
of a neo-modern figure who is able to ex-
plain Al-Qur’an which is relevant to the au-
dience’s daily life. Quraish does not leave
out his traditional point of view and his sufi
conviction.
While, KH Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus
Dur, called this man who was born in
Rapang, South Sulawesi, February 16th
1944, as the Village’s Ulama (Kiai kam-
pung) which mean determined to teach,
set example, and in everything that he
does.
In his speech after receiving the Life-
time Achievement Award, Quraish Shihab
admitted to be grateful on the bestowal
that the God has given to him. “If God
gave me the choice to repeat time, so I
would choose the same with what I have
experienced, because I was given the
chance and bestowal by God to learn very
little of His knowledge.
Egypt Offers Cooperation
in Translation
The Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia, His
Excellency Ahmed El Kewainsky said that he
is committed to carry out good relation with
the academic community of UIN, especially
with the Faculty of Dirasat Islamiyah (FDI).
One of the ways is to hold cooperation in
translating books written by Indonesian
Ulamas into Arabic. Besides that, Egypt is
also planning to hold an exchange program
on television programs.
The statement was conveyed when the
Ambassador gave a general lecture before
the officials and academic community of FDI
in the Main Auditorium of UIN on Wednesday
(7/10)
In his speech, Ambassador Ahmed also
stated the urgency of science. According
to him science is expected to make people
wiser. Science should not only be a concept,
but needs to be implemented based on good
morality which in turn will be beneficial to hu-
man kind. The Ambassador further stated
that Islam as a religion which truly appreci-
ates science, strongly advises its followers
not to isolate oneself, accept differences
and be tolerant
The Ambassador’s visit to UIN is a return
visit to the visit of Dean of the Faculty of Dira-
sat Islamiyah, Abudin Nata to al-Azhar Univer-
sity two months ago. This visit is expected
to strenghten the cooperation between Indo-
nesia and Egypt in general and between UIN
and al-Azhar University in particular.

Iran Offers Cooperation
on the Development of Technology
Deputy Minister for Research and Technology
of Islamic Republic of Iran, Khurasyad visited
UIN campus accompanied by Iranian Ambas-
sador to Indonesia, His Excellency Behrouz
Kamalvandi and was accepted by the Rector
Prof. Dr. Hidayat Komaruddin, the vice Rectors
and deans of faculties on thursday (15/10).
Iran offered co-operations in the field of bio-
technology, cell nucleus, earthquakes, space
industry, and nano technology to UIN in order
to develop Moslem’s science and technology,
The co-operations will come in the form of
lectures and students exchanges, research,
training and workshops. To make these co-
operations a reality, it will be laid out in a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and
Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) in the near
future.
Although there are many pressures from
Aminef Offers the Scholarship to America
American Indonesian Exchange Foundation
(Aminef) offers Fulbright scholarship to study
in some of the foremost university in United
State. The offer was conveyed by Kevin Pogg
PhD and Ferdinand Okki from Educationa Ad-
vising Service Aminef when they visited UIN,
Wednesday (25/11). The scholarship infor-
mation was socialized to the UIN’s students
in American Corner Room, Main Library Build-
ing.
“The scholarship is aimed to encourage
more Indonesian students, especially UIN
students to continue their study in America,”
Ferdinan said.
Furthermore, Okki said, the study pro-
grams that Aminef offers are Fulbright Mas-
ter’s Degree Program, Fulbright-Freeport Mas-
ter’s Degree and PhD Program, Fulbright-DIKTI
Master’s Degree Program, Fulbright Presiden-
tial Scholarship Program (PhD Program), In-
ternational Fulbright Science and Technology

the west, the country of mullahs experienced
rapid advancements in science and technolo-
gy, among others the ability to produce nucle-
ar fuel on an industrial scale. Previously, Iran
was also successful in breeding the nucleus
of cells which is of great value to the medical
world. There are currently only ten countries
in the world which are able to develop this
technology.
Recently, coinciding with the commemora-
tion of Islamic Revolution’s victory, Iranian sci-
entists announced their success in producing
antiretroviral drugs to treat functional retrovi-
rus infections caused by HIV / AIDS. This is a
big leap in curing the deadly AIDS disease.
Besides that, in the aerospace industry,
Iran has been able to design, plan and send
satellites into space.

the scholarship, Okki added, the applicants

short essay in line with thefiled the applicant
apply for.
“Many applicants fail to pass the selection
because of the essay they made tend to be
abstract and not to the point,” he said.

Morals were Upheld
in the Period of the
Ottoman Empire
In the caliphate of the Ottoman Empire, Is-
lam was at the peak of its glory. Turkish at
that time firmly adhered to the Quran and
the Hadith, including on matters dealing
with morals and customs.
This was stated by Director of UIN’s
Fethullah Gulen Chair Dr Ali Unsal in gen-
eral lecturer “The Moral Values in Ottoman”
which was held in Graduate School’s Hall,
Tuesday (22/12).
Ali explained that some of the moral
values that are adhered to were cleanli-
ness, honesty, responsibility and decency.
At that time, the people of the Ottoman
Empire really took care of their personal
hygiene. They implement in their daily life
the hadith which noted that cleanliness is
part of faith.
This is evidenced by the habits such
as removing shoes before entering the
house, not keeping animals in the house
and separating room for shower and toi-
let. This was so much different from the
European custom in which they took their
baths irregularly.
“Cleanliness originated from Islam,
and Muslims truly like cleanliness. We keep
ourselves clean five times a day by doing
ablutions before praying. This activity not
only makes us clean physically but also
spiritually,” he explained.
Ottoman Turks are very honest be-
cause since childhood, they were taught
of Islamic morality based on Al-Quran and
as-Sunnah. According to an account of a
visitor who visited Turkey during the Caliph-
ate of the Ottoman Empire, if there hap-
pened to be a wallet or money that was
lying around, no one would have dared to
take it. The wallet and the money would
have been returned to its owner.
“If a person had been proven lying, his
or her forehead would have been marked,
so that the public know that he was liar,”
he added.
At that time also, there are so many
foundations dedicated to helping oth-
ers and preserving the environment and
animals. There was no discrimination, all
groups even non Muslims were respected.
In fact, travelers or tourists who came
from outside Turkey were highly respect-
ed, which was shown by the existence of
places that provide free lodging, food, and
drink.
“I could conclude that under the leader-
ship of the Ottoman Empire during the sixth
century, harmony, security and diversity
was well-maintained based on the morals
of Islamic society which was implemented
