Four Basic Language Skills
Most people who desire to learn a new language do it for avariety of reasons but most importantly it is done in orderto communicate in that language. To communicate it isimportant to study a balance of the four basic languageskills. Reading, listening, writing, and speaking are themain skills you need to communicate in any language.Being very good at only one of these skills will not help youto communicate. For example you need to be able to readwell before you can write well. You also need to be able tolisten before you can speak.Although there should be equal importance to these skills, Ithink the following order is best, especially if the writingsystem is different: reading - listening - writing – speaking.Language educators have long used the concepts of fourbasic language skills:
1

Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing
The four basic skills are related to each other by twoparameters. We can show their relationship in the followingchart:OralReceptive (Input)ListeningProductive (output) SpeakingI speak to you (OUTPUT: my thoughts go OUT of my head). You listen to me (INPUT: my thoughts go INto your head). You write to me (OUTPUT: your thoughts go OUT of yourhead).I read your words (INPUT: your thoughts go INto my head).
Listening
When we speak of listening what we really mean is listeningand understanding what we hear. In our first language, wehave all the skills and background knowledge we need tounderstand what we hear, so we probably aren't evenaware of how complex a process it is. Here we will brieflydescribe some of what is involved in learning to understandwhat we hear in a second language.
