hey were the ugliest bridesmaid dressesHeather Montgomery had ever seen, and she'dseen her share of them. When you had afamily that could fill Texas Stadium,somebody was always getting married, and itwas family law that cousins asked cousins to be bridesmaids, even if it meant bloodrelatives had to stand in line behind five of the bride's sorority sisters.This time around it was Heather's cousinRegina tying the knot, and she'd chosen thesedresses for one reason only: her high-pricedwedding planner had convinced her they werethe height of fashion. To Heather they simplylooked ridiculous.

"Regina!" squealed Bridesmaid Number One, as she fanned out the skirt of one of thesix petticoated, pouffy-sleeved, waist-huggingcreations. "They're

!"Two and Three voiced similar opinions,while Four and Five stroked the satinreverently, making breathy little noises oapproval. Heather had given up trying toremember five names all ending in "i"--Cami,Taci, Tami, whatever--and which blondwoman belonged to each one. ,Heather traded furtive eye-rolls with hemother. Barbara Montgomery had come alongon this dress-fitting excursion, even thoughshe didn't particularly like her sister

her niece. She was there because family weddingsalways stirred things up, and if she stayed inthe thick of things she was sure to be aroundwhen the pandemonium began.
