Friending a brand
A survey by eMarketer revealed that consumers are not only connecting with each other, but also
directly with brands. About 25% of those polled in the survey follow a brand on Twitter. And 40%
had friended a brand on Facebook or MySpace. The impact of friending a brand is staggering: 96%
of those polled either always, usually, or sometimes recommend the brand to others. Ninety-eight
per cent consider the brand when they are in the market for the product or service and no less than
97% reported actually buying a product or service from the brand. “A solid majority of connected
consumers have had their opinion of a brand swayed, either positively or negatively, by an online
experience”, concluded eMarketer. Consumers

decision-making process of its existing and potential customers.
New influencers
So today friends, colleagues and other peers in a social network are the new influencers – those
consumers who voice their views, opinions and questions on social media. Seventy-eight per cent of
social media users trust peer recommendations while only 14% trust advertising.
In the social web a brand’s reputation is in the hands of the new influencers. Reaching smaller
numbers of the right people is far more valuable than reaching millions via traditional advertising.
Media
Now that the power is back in the hands of the public, the role of public relations is to cultivate

relevant relationships with various groups and individuals. Social media provide the tools to listen to
NGOs
these people, to engage in a dialogue and so build engagement with the brand.
Opinion leaders
Stakeholders can get together quickly and easily online. By sharing their experiences they
co-determine (and sometimes undermine) the corporate image and reputation. To find out what
people are saying about them, companies and organisations need to monitor online media.
Een echte revolutie? Beeldvorming in online tijdperk
Meestal was
ders.

Add “Indonesia” as a friend?
When I left Indonesia a year ago, almost none of my friends and family were in Facebook. Now it
seems that only my grandfather does not use it. All of a sudden I have many friend requests from
friends of friends who I have never met. Indonesia has almost 12 million Facebook users. Facebook
also attracts attention from the Muslim clerics. Last May they created guidelines on how to use
Facebook. They did not ban it, but advised only using the site to connect with friends or for work.
Gossiping, spreading lies, flirting, asking intimate questions and vulgar behaviour are forbidden. My
first reaction was: “Wait, what was that again?” Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that they
have recognized the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook and try to keep up with the internet
age. But I cannot get my head round how they plan to apply the guidelines. I asked my friends back
home how they view the guidelines, and none of them could give me a serious answer.
Still, I am very excited to see how social media will grow more and more back home.
Almost 12 million Facebook users is a very warm greeting from Indonesians to Facebook and other
social media platforms.

Social media in the
palm of your hand
The (online) world moves at the speed of light. Time’s flown before the clock’s even struck. A 2-hour-old
Tweet is an outdated Tweet. That’s why you can’t be without a tool (read: mobile phone) with a dozen
of online tools (applications) as well as Twitter. With my iPhone I can surf (WifiTrak), update my
weblog (Wordpress), keep up with my social contacts (Facebook), video chat (Skype), network
(LinkedIn), share photos (Flickr), inspire (Echofon /Twitter).
But an iPhone has infinite other uses. I can find the nearest Levi jeans store (iLocal), the nearest ATM
to facilitate payment for the jeans (ATM hunter) or the tune the store is playing while I’m paying for
my jeans (Shazam). And all from my back pocket.
So you see. The world’s your oyster. As long as you’ve got it all in the palm of your hand!

Social media saves classic Zündapp
This Zündapp K800 from 1935 was saved from the scrapheap by social media. I restored this
motorbike, one of three specimens now known to be operational in the Netherlands.
When you find a pile of old rust like this, you haven’t a clue where to start. I found that I could ask
my questions mostly on German forums – and I got an answer within a day. I exchanged parts with
other Zündapp lovers until I had completely rebuilt the engine.

Online dialogue in four steps Platform
Now that a growing number of consumers and the general public go online for entertainment,
answers to questions, research and information or to purchase goods, companies can no longer
avoid the net. But how can online dialogue best be approached? Where do you find your target
group? And how can you include your boss or client in a number of decision-making steps?
1 Segment. Who exactly do you want to reach online? Offline you think mass-medial, and in age Fora
demographics. But online you can search specifically for office managers, people living in the
Charlois neighbourhood of Rotterdam or people wanting to know if a laundry detergent is
biodegradable. How? It’s simple: each specific dialogue can be found and followed - something
you can’t do in the offline world!
2 Social. What exactly do you want to get across online? In the offline world, it’s mainly about
marketing your product, service or company. Online, it’s all about dialogue. So you’ve got to get
involved in a social dialogue – perhaps a health issue or something related to gardening. Try to go
further – to create a platform for your own product – and you’ll immediately get the cold shoulder.
It’s all about the right tone of voice, the right words, the right message.
3 Scan. Where exactly are people online? Find out by using an online scan with the help of an online
monitoring system. Don’t forget that you have 3 focus areas online: You
1 popular, personal blogs;
2 discussion forums (Viva Forum, Digitaal Bestuur) and
3 social media (LinkedIn, Hyves).
4 Satisfaction. Exactly how many people are you going to reach, and how? The scan can only now Social Media Blogs

number of dialogues, number of followers, number of company bloggers. With your boss or client,
define when the satisfaction point will be reached.

Online dialoog in vier stappen Platform
1 Segmenteer.
product, dienst of bedrijf.
1 populaire, persoonlijke blogs
2 discussiefora (Viva Forum, Digitaal Bestuur)
3 social media (LinkedIn, Hyves).
4 Satisfaction.
Heel belangrijk: meten. Van bezoekerscijfers,
aantal dialogen, aantal volgers, aantal bedrijfsbloggers.
