Vassar College Bookstore Advisory Committee
Vassar College Bookstore Research Report
April 16, 2002
** This report is solely for use by the Vassar College community and may not bedistributed to outside parties other than questionnaire participants.**
April 16, 2002The College Bookstore Advisory Committee was established in February of2001 by the Vassar Administration through the Office of the Vice Presidentfor Finance (headed at the time by Stephen Dahnert). It meets regularlywith the Bookstore Manager and provides a channel of communication betweenthe store and store users, where store practices and policies can bereviewed and discussed and suggestions for changes and improvementsoffered. While a common feature to many college stores, it was deemedparticularly appropriate given the change in store management the precedingsemester. At the same time, many members of the Vassar community had questions andconcerns about this newly implemented transition to a contract managedcollege bookstore, the choice of Barnes and Noble College Bookstores Inc.as the managing company, and the process that led to these decisions.Several College constituencies, including the Vassar Student Association, askedthe Advisory Committee to provide relevant background so that there could beinformed discussion of these changes. A subcommittee was established for thispurpose and it began its research at the end of that semester. The finalreport of the Subcommittee has been reviewed by the Advisory Committee andis attached. We hope that the information provided gives the Collegecommunity both the background and structural framework (alternativesavailable, basic terms, history, etc.) needed to understand and discussthese issues.Todd Dickey, President, Class of 2004--co-chairJesse Kalin, Prof. Philosophy--co-chair
