Description

If you have a mental health problem, you really must take fish oil or cod liver oil. About a quarter of the brain is made up of the fats that are found in these oils, and if the brain does not have the raw materials it needs for its own functioning, it is not going to be happy.

Supplementation with these oils is also part of the Gut and Psychology treatment of Dr Campbell-McBride. Fish Oil and Cod Liver Oil are effectively the same, except you have a much higher vitamin D and vitamin A content in cod liver oil. It is possible to have too much vitamin D, so you cannot take mega-doses of cod liver oil. You can take rather larger doses of Fish Oil if you are so inclined.

Note that many studies on fish oil separate it out into its basic elements, EPA and DHA, often claiming that one is far better than the other for certain illnesses.

My take on this would be: For many thousands of years, mankind has eaten much more oily fish than today, with significantly less mental health problems than there are today.

Natural fish oil, which is just made by crushing the oil from dead fish, is therefore historically proven.

I would not, and do not, pay extra for products that interfere with the natural balance of EPA and DHA in fish oil.

Note that some doctors will recommend that you just eat more oily fish. This is nonsense, as whether a fish has any EPA/DHA containing oil in it depends entirely on its diet. In these days of fish farming, you cannot guarantee that an "oily" fish actually has any fish oil with EPA and DHA in it at all.

Doctors who recommend more fish for patients must also make recommendations of the type of fish, servicing size and frequency. Cold, deep water coming from Alaska, Norway or South America has the highest Omega 3 and the best quality oils without all the pollutants. Either 2000mg of fish balanced fish oil per day or at least 4-6oz of salmon would be ideal. If this is not possible, then a good quality supplement is recommended. For example Nordic Naturals seem to formulate the best fish oils in my experience. I found reasonably priced bottles of prodha, proepa andproomega at http://crohnsstore.com.
