Description
Dr Campbell-McBride is a Russian born doctor with a practice in the UK. She deals mainly with children with autism, as well as some mental health issues. She has developed a theory called GAPS, that is based on the idea that the gut plays a very large role in these illnesses, and that if you heal the gut then other illnesses will recede. This is not just a theory: she applies it to her patients with Autism, Depression, Schizophrenia, ADD, ADHD and related issues.
The theory is very readable, and the results on her patients are impressive. The great thing about the treatment is that you can try it yourself, without a doctor, and it is relatively cheap to do so.
I have been experimenting in a small way with the probiotic treatment (without the associated diet) for about 18 months, and as far as schizophrenia is concerned, the effect on the “negative” symptoms has been very impressive. I have even noticed quite subtle unexpected changes – eg, people with schizophrenia often make very poor eye contact – this trait has vanished in me.
I believe that this document represents the biggest advance in the treatment of schizophrenia I have seen for some time. While researchers concentrate on genes and chemical messengers that never seem to lead anywhere, and drug companies launch more “me-too” anti-psychotics that do not improve on the older ones, this has positive benefits with zero side effects.
Initially I experimented with a "mild" probiotic, but have now moved on to a "theraupetic" type probiotic. The mild one has produced good results for some aspects of schizophrenia, and I am hoping for more now I am using a stronger one.
I will try to detail the results of the probiotic supplementation on schizophrenia as soon as I get a chance...
