As The Story of my Body opens, a nameless woman wanders in a forest that she cannot identify. She is not the victim of amnesia; she has not been kidnapped or molested in any way. Yet she feels afloat, lost in a world which she doesn’t understand. Throughout her wanderings the narrator is followed by the figure, in ghost and physical form, of her mother. Anna, as she finally comes to call herself, is the product of a time and place in which people must invent their own identities. Without the boundaries that usually form identity—family, community, race, history—she searches through the years for something that she can identify with, someone that she can be.
