9/30/05 HHS press release re: Dr. Koop's Heimlich endorsement

On 9/30/85, the US Department of Health and Human Services issued this widely-reported press release reporting that US Surgeon General C. Everett Koop was urging first aid organizations to endorse the Heimlich maneuver over other choking rescue methods, claiming those methods were "hazardous, even lethal." By doing so, Koop interfered in an ongoing debate regarding the best method to treat choking victims.

Koop, who had a longtime pre-existing relationship with Dr. Henry Heimlich, has repeatedly refused to answer on what scientific evidence he based his decision. More information here: http://medfraud.info/Koop .html
