This month
The Mariner
featuresyoung Zac Sunderland who isproposing to be the youngest toever circumnavigate. At 16, Zacis bright-eyed and ready to tackleanything that comes his way. Heknows his boat thoroughly frombelow the waterline to the topof the mast and by all rights isfearless going in.As I interviewed Zac for thestory, I thought, man, this kidis going to go around the earthalone. In a short amount of timehe’ll be considering weathersystems and the behavioralcharacteristics of certain oceans. He’ll see wildlife that he’s neverseen, even in books, and he’llmeet people that will likelychange his perspective forever. In all likelihood, they’ll be times
where he’ll ght for his very life
and other times where lonelinesswill haunt him like none of uswill ever know.My thought drifted to who I waswhen I was his age and would Ihave taken on such a challenge.Hmmm. Well, I know at 16 Ihad quite a few chin zits and Ihated that. Maybe if I could havestopped thinking about themand focused on a bigger plan, the circumnav thing would havecome into focus. And I recollect
getting a at on my bicycle and
throwing it in a dumpster because
I knew I couldn’t x it. Then
there was the time I saved all
my money to buy reworks with
a friend for Fourth of July andaccidentally shot a bottle rocket
into the bag full of explosives
causing a scene not unlikesomething from
 Apocalypse Now
. While running for my lifefrom the self-imposed missileattack, I vaguely rememberconsidering an ocean crossing, but not a full circumnavigation.Yeah, Zac Sunderland is notypical 16-year old kid and thiscommunity should be very proudthat he’s beginning his quest here. When he unties those dock lines, that “kid” will remain. Whenhe returns sometime in 2010, a
man with a world of experience
will step from that boat – foreverchanged.
