This article assesses the highly significant consequences for the oil sector of the Iraq War of 2003. It reviews the causes of the Iraq War, provides an estimate of Iraqi oil reserves, and describes the major oil fields. Other topics include: the conduct of the Iraq War, what oil policies might a post-Saddam regime pursue, current and prospective production-sharing agreements, international oil companies and their interests in Iraq, the state of the Iraqi oil sector and the potential for increasing oil production, the impact of the war on Iraq’s neighbors, and the geopolitical consequences.
