This paper looks at the geopolitics and economics of exporting Central Asian energy via Iran. With existing pipelines and access to both the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf, Iran would seem the most viable route for hydrocarbon exports logistically. However, the politics of the region complicate matters for the Central Asian energy exporters of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. This article compares the various export route options for these countries and their constraints, in addition, to providing an in-depth mapping of Iran’s pipelines and infrastructure.
