Durham local ood eforts gets boost rom Greenbelt
The
Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation
is pleased to announce today $35,000 in unding or a newinitiative in Durham Region.Starting immediately, the
Community Development Council Durham
(CDCD) will be taking up thetask o putting into action the goals and mandate o the Durham Region Food Charter. The Charteris a document that reects the communities’ values and belies or ood security in the region. It wasendorsed by Durham Regional Council last December. The CDCD will be working closely with their community partners and with the Region o Durhamto develop a community-based Action Plan and a Working Group ocused on ood security anddeveloping the local ood economy. This project is intended to put structure and plans in place that will see some o the goals o theCharter become a reality. The ultimate goal will be to establish a Food Policy Council or the Regiono Durham.Long-time advocate o the Greenbelt and anti-sprawl planning policies, Bonnie Littley, RegionalCouncillor, Ward 1, Pickering states, “A cornerstone o long-term sustainability is ood. So to promoteenvironmental, economic, and social sustainability there must be planning or the uture o ood.Currently several departments in Regional government, as well as a multitude o individuals,armers, not-or-proft and agricultural organizations work on various aspects relating to ood andood security. A Region o Durham Food Policy Council would provide opportunities to bring localpeople and their ideas and knowledge together, not only to build on previous accomplishmentsin the Region, but would also establish a collaborative approach to fnding solutions and creatingpositive change.” An important aspect o this project is continued involvement and consultation with local armersand arm groups.“This is an amazing git or our community and one that could take us a huge step towards actuallyimplementing the Durham Region Food Charter that many individuals and concerned groups inDurham have spent years trying to secure,” says James Blair o the newly ounded DurhamCulinary Association, teacher and member o the arming community.(continued)
