Before Reading
The Hobbit was written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien in the 1930’s. Originallyintended as a children’s story, it has become one of the most influential works of thetwentieth century. It has spawned a number of sequels, including the Lord of theRings trilogy, as well as countless renditions in the forms of film, radio, theatre, andgames.
