moment (Nm)
This is either
clockwise
or
anticlockwise
, depending on which direction the force is in. It ismeasured in
Newton metres, Nm
.
force, F (N)
This is the size of the force (e.g. the weight). It ismeasured in
Newtons, N
.
distance, d (m)
The perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the axis of rotation. It ismeasured in
metres, m
.

If two moments are acting in opposite directions, then subtract the smaller from the larger:

hi how to follow the sign conventions for calculating moment of a force. please explain, I am really confused

phydotsi replied:

Moments are always stated as being "clockwise" or "anticlockwise". If a moment is stated as being clockwise, then a positive moment will be going in that direction. A "negative clockwise moment" will actually be going anti-clockwise. (Note that Americans say "counter-clockwise" instead of "anti-clockwise").
