Routine preoperative investigations

Check local hospital policy.

•Urinalysis•ECG•All patients: for sugar,blood and protein•Age> 50 years•History of heart disease,hypertension or chroniclung disease•A normal previous tracewithin 1 year isacceptable unless thereis a recent cardiac history

•FBC•Blood urea,electrolytes andcreatinine•Males > 40 years•All females•All major surgery•Whenever anemia issuspected•Age >50 years•All major surgeryDiuretic drugs•Suspected renaldisease

•Blood glucose•Coagulation screen•Sickle cell test•Diabetic patients•Glycosuria•Age > 50 years•History of bleedingtendency (some unitsmeasure before major surgery)•Black patients withunknown sickle status. If positive then hemoglobinelectrophoresis should beperformed
