Jan. 25, 2010 Letter ToPresident Obama
By Harold Estes
Dear President Obama,My name is Harold Estes, approaching95 on December 13 of this year. Peoplemeeting me for the first time don'tbelieve my age because I remain wrinklefree and pretty much mentally alert.I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 andserved proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'nMate. Now I live in a "rest home"located on the western end of PearlHarbor, allowing me to keep alive thememories of 23 years of service to mycountry. One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, bluntand direct even to the head man. So heregoes.I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.I can't figure out what country you are the president of. You fly around the world telling ourfriends and enemies despicable lies like:"We're no longer a Christian nation""America is arrogant" -- (Your wife evenannounced to the world, "America ismean- spirited." Please tell her to try preaching that nonsense to 23generations of our war dead buried allover the globe who died for no otherreason than to free a whole lot of strangers from tyranny andhopelessness.)I'd say shame on the both of you, but Idon’t think you like America, nor do Isee an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this countryhas given you. To be without shame orgratefulness is a dangerous thing for aman sitting in the White House. After 9/11 you said, "America hasn’tlived up to her ideals." Which ones did you mean? Was it thenotion of personal liberty that 11,000farmers and shopkeepers died for to winindependence from the British? Ormaybe the ideal that no man should be aslave to another man, that 500,000 mendied for in the Civil War? I hope youdidn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas Iknew personally died for in WWII,because we felt real strongly about notletting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.I don't think you mean the ideal thatsays equality is better thandiscrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.Take a little advice from a very oldgeezer, young man.Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don't, I'll do what Ican to see you get shipped out of thatfancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue. You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves. And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn thatMuslim major who killed 13 of hisfellow soldiers and wounded dozensmore. You mean you don’t want us to do what you did when that white cop usedforce to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don’t mindoffending the police calling them stupidbut you don’t want us to offend Muslimfanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists. One more thing. I realize you neverserved in the military and never had todefend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete themission, give them to him. But if you'renot in this fight to win, then get out. Thelife of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of. You could be our greatest presidentbecause you face the greatest challengeever presented to any president. You're not going to restore Americangreatness by bringing back our bloatedeconomy. That's not our greatest threat.Losing the heart and soul of who we areas Americans is our big fight now. And I sure as hell don't want to thinkmy president is the enemy in this finalbattle.Sincerely,Harold B. Jan. 28, 2010 Obama Defiant
By Jacob Laskin - FrontPage Magazine
In a speech that signaled his intention to“start anew,” perhaps the most notablefeature of President Obama’s first-everState of the Union address
was howremarkably stale it sounded.
HisStory Revealed
Against the backdrop of plummeting poll ratings and the election of aRepublican Senator in Democrat-friendly Massachusetts – anunmistakable message about the broadunpopularity of the policies supportedby the administration and its allies in theDemocratic Congress – PresidentObama last night hewed to a partisan playbook that can only be described asbusiness as usual. From economicallyruinous “cap-and-trade” legislation, to the widely disliked health care “reform” package, to specious left-wing nostrumslike “equal pay for equal work,” the president pledged to work for a sharplyideological agenda that would have pleased the Democratic base even as it would have disappointed those who tookseriously his repeated appeals tobipartisanship.Obama began with the confession thathe has “never been more hopeful about America’s future than I am tonight.” America has a more skeptical view. Thenonpartisan Congressional BudgetOffice reported this week that thecurrent 10 percent unemployment rate isno closer to receding in the near term. Add to that a runaway national debtexpected to triple to $22 trillion over thenext decade, much of it caused bygovernment spending, and it’s notsurprising that Americans aredissatisfied with the administration’sstewardship of the economy. The president did little to boost theirconfidence. Obama’s assurance that hisadministration’s policies – namely, the$787 billion stimulus package – havesaved two million jobs from being lost isby definition impossible to corroborate.Easier to measure is the stimulus’s effecton hiring: Economists agree that it hascreated no jobs
. Unsurprisingly, in touting the economic benefits of stimulus spending, Obama cited only jobs in the public sector. Given how little the administration has done toencourage hiring in the private sector, the president’s self-serving claim to haveaverted an economic disaster and saved the country from a “second Depression” was difficult to credit. No more credible was the president’s promise to trim the country’s swellingdebt. In keeping with a proposal floatedearlier in the week, Obama called for afreeze on some discretionary spending programs. That this spendthriftadministration is prepared accept somefiscal belt-tightening is of course a welcome development. But critics havebeen quick to note that the proposedcuts will be the equivalent of a drop in theocean – especially since the costliestgovernment programs – includingMedicare, Medicaid and Social Security – would be unaffected by the freeze.Equally unfortunate was the president’s penchant, once again on display, forcaricaturing and distorting thearguments of his political opponents. While Republicans like Wisconsin’s PaulRyan have offeredinnovative solutions
for reforming high-cost government programs and restraining governmentspending, the president simply repeatedhis standard jibe that the GOP is “justsaying no to everything” and offering no proposals of their own. VirginiaGovernor Bob McDonnell
himself abeneficiary of the populist backlashagainst the administration, paid amodest compliment to the intelligence of  the American people and performed alegitimate public service when he usedhis rebuttal to call attention to the website
of Republican policy proposals. Indeed, McDonnell’sresponse was a textbook example of thekind of respectful and genuinelyconciliatory tone that the presidentseems to endorse only in theory.Obama missed his biggest opportunity to forge a political middle ground whenhe discussed national security. Bysignificant margins, the American publicfavors more assertive counterterrorismmeasures. To that end, theadministration could do much for American security, and its own politicalfortunes, if it supported the use of harsher interrogation techniques on terrorists like would-be Christmasbomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallabandabandoned its plans to stage civilian trials for high-level jihadists like KhalidSheikh Mohammed...Instead, the president used his speech todenounce coercive interrogation techniques as “torture,” while chidingcritics for presenting a “false choice”between defending national security andupholding the country’s values. Yet such tradeoffs arise all the time. The latestexample would be underwear bomberUmar Farouk Abdulmutallab.Interrogated for just 50 minutes beforebeing passed into police custody, heseems to have revealed little about terrorist operations abroad as a result. That such incidents have been allowed to occur on Obama’s watch inspires littleconfidence in the president’s claim thathis administration is doing “what it takes to defend our nation.”Unusually for Obama’s scriptedspeeches, the State of the Union showeda spectacular lack of self-awareness.Concluding his remarks, the presidentlamented that Americans have lost faithin the country’s institutions, not least thegovernment itself. It was a statement as politically tone deaf as Obama’s recentclaim
that “the same thing that sweptScott Brown into office swept me intooffice.” In fact, Brown was elected on the strength of an electoral insurgencyagainst the administration and itsdomestic policy agenda. As he puzzlesover Americans’ growing skepticism of big government, the president seems not to recognize that he is the change theyseek.http://frontpagemag.com/2010/01/28/ obama-defiant/
