 Poesia Visiva
 began in Florence, in the early 1960s. This art offers a critique of mass media and explores the relationship of poetry, language, and literature to contemporary media.The purpose of this exhibition is to bring attention in the U.S.A. to powerful examples of this important artistic movement.Visual Poetry, influenced by the study of semiotics, extends poetry from the verbal into the visual arts.I would like to thank the artists, Giuseppe Chiari, Claudio Francia, Eugenio Miccini and Lamberto Pignotti for their par-ticipation. Mr. Carlo Palli has generously lent works from his private collection and assisted with shipping arrangements.Claudio Francia contributed substantially to the coordination of contacts with the artists and facilitating communicationwith the lenders to the exhibition. Special thanks also must go to Mr. Robert Ragir for proposing and funding the exhibi-tion. He also served as a liason with the artists in the exhibition.I would like to thank the essayists for their contributions to this catalogue.
