As given by Alan Woolworth of Minnesota State Historical Society to Walt Bachman, NewYork, NY.Transcribed by Carol Workman 6/27/20061853 Document No 125I Francis Trudell of Dakotah Co. Min. Ter. (near Mendota) do solemnly swear that I am a CanadianFrenchman. About twenty years ago I was married by Indian custom, to a Sioux woman of the MdewahkantonBand. At her baptism she was called Mary. She is now about 36 yrs. of age & I am 48. We live together & haveseven children now living, viz: Francis aged seventeen years, Joseph aged ten years, Augustin aged seven; Henryaged five years; Elizabeth aged four years; Peter aged two years and Levi aged one month. They are Half Breeds& all live with us.hisFrancis X Trudellmark 1853 Document No 126I, George H. Faribault of Mendota Min Ter do solemnly swear that I well know the above Francis Trudell,also his wife and all his children, seven in number as stated by him, and believe his affidavit true in all respects.His wife is a full blood Sioux and he is a Frenchman. He is a man of irreproachable character and his affidavit isentitled to full credit. I have known this family from my earliest recollection. I am now twenty nine years of age.Signed George H. Faribault___________________________________________________________________Francis served in the Civil War and the Dakota Indian Wars. He enlisted 11 September 1862 in Company K,9th Minnesota Infantry Regiment as a Private, and was discharged for disability, 2 July 1863. At enlistment hisage was listed as 45, born in Canada East, and Residing in Wabasha, Wabasha County, Minnesota.Listed as Francois Trudelle in a Land Patent dated 10 March 1856.He was a member of the American Legion.He sponsored the baptism of Josephine Montreuil, 25 December 1841.He sponsored the baptism of Georges Provencalle, 25 December 1841.The Santee Agency Death Register, 1880-1905, lists him as aged 49 upon his death.On 30 January 1848, Francois Perron dit Trudelle witnessed the marriage of Joseph Monjeau and AnneLamarche in St. Croix County, Wisconsin.The 1875 Wisconsin State Census of Nelson, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, lists him with 6 males and 4females.
