The Sustainability Yearbook 2010, published bySAM and PricewaterhouseCoopers, offers you anoverview of the results of SAM’s 11th annualassessment of corporate sustainability practices, which provides the basis for the prestigious DowJones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). In 2009, thesustainability performance of more than 1,200companies was evaluated. It is encouraging to seea steady increase in participation rates in ourassessment, which we believe clearly reflectsthe rising awareness and importance of corpo-rate sustainability management even in times ofcrisis.Just as more and more companies are managingsustainability-related risks and profiting fromsustainability-related opportunities in a systematicmanner, asset owners and asset managers arepaying increasing attention to sustainability criteriain their investment decisions. More than 600 assetowners and asset managers representing combinedassets of over USD 20 trillion already subscribe tothe United Nations Principles for ResponsibleInvestment (UN PRI). UN PRI signatories commit tothe integration of environmental, social and cor-porate governance criteria in their investmentdecision-making process. The UN PRI is a majorinitiative with the aim of promoting sustainablebusiness practices. As a pioneer in the integration of key sustainabilitycriteria into traditional financial valuation methodo-logy SAM shares its insights in this year’s edition ofthe yearbook. We highlight the opportunities forinstitutional investors and identify sustainabilityperformance drivers that affect the risk-return profileof current and future investments. We also show-case company examples where the results of SAM’sCorporate Sustainability Assessment impact corporatestrategy development. These business cases en-dorse our belief that we have built a very powerfulplatform for engagement with companies. The Sustainability Yearbook 2010 contains sustain-ability insights into 58 sectors. The top performersin each sector qualify as “SAM Sector Leaders”. Inaddition, the companies that have achieved themost significant year-to-year improvement in theircorporate sustainability performance in each sectorare recognized as “SAM Sector Movers”. Readersinterested in details not covered in this publication areencouraged to use SAM’s interactive web-basedYearbook tool (www.sam-group.com/yearbook),which allows users to delve deeper into the topicand analyze the data in more detail. We hope you enjoy reading our Yearbook, and welook forward to discussing sustainability-relatedissues with you.
