Dear Friend
It is now the beginning ofFebruary, the days are startingto get longer and there is thesense of new beginnings justaround the corner.
Isn’t it sad when people, having
reached a certain birthdaymilestone, decide that life holdsnothing new, exciting or evenworthwhile for them anymore?Far better, surely, to be like author Mary Ogilvie who,
in the 1800’s and having just celebrated her ninety
-third birthday, saw her first book published! It went by
the grand sounding title of “A Scottish Childhood andWhat Happened After”
They do say that everyone has a book in them. Haveyou started yours yet? Mary Ogilvie did
 –
and shefinished it!
Neglect not the gift that is in thee……

I Am One ofThem
Brother Roy
Just before the Christmasholidays I fell very ill with a Fluvirus and had to take sometime off from the Sanctuary andall the celebrations that I hadplanned over the followingweeks were cancelled. Duringthat time I read to take my mindoff the illness and came uponan article about the Hawaiianisland of Molokai.Hardly anywhere in the world is there a lovelier spot thanMolokai, the Pacific island is always bathed in sunshine, always fanned by soft and sweet airs. Yet this was once one
of the world’s saddest places. A place where hope, had been
abandoned. Where on
e’s suffering was intense, and
loneliness was almost unbearable. For Molokai was theisland to which lepers were sent to linger unloved until deathbrought release. But the wretchedness of its exiles came tothe ears of Joseph de Veuster, a Belgian born at Tremeloonear Louvain. Becoming a monk at eighteen, he took the nowfamous and honoured name of Father Damien. Of his ownfree will he turned his back on home and kindred, sailed forMolokai and became a father of the people. He was one with them in their distresses. He loved thosewhom all men loathed. He served the outcasts day and night, ministered to their souls, and did what he could for theirbodies. After some years his glorious act of sacrifice wonworld wide recognition, and a medical station wasestablished so that Father Damien could give at least sometreatment and ease pain a little.
