A short description of what will happen during the hearing.

A statement indicating that the School Code allows the
Board to expel a student for a definite period of time not to
exceed two (2) calendar years, as determined on a caseby-case basis.
A request that the student or parent(s)/guardian(s) inform
the District if the student will be represented by an
attorney and, if so, the attorneys name.

Unless the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) indicate that they

do not want a hearing or fail to appear at the designated time
and place, the hearing will proceed. It shall be conducted by
the Board or a hearing officer appointed by it. If a hearing
officer is appointed, he or she shall report to the Board the
evidence presented at the hearing and the Board shall take
such final action as it finds appropriate.
During the expulsion hearing, the Board or hearing officer shall
hear evidence concerning whether the student is guilty of the
gross disobedience or misconduct as charged. The student
and his or her parent(s)/guardian(s) may be represented by
counsel, offer evidence, present witnesses, cross-examine
witnesses who testified, and otherwise present reasons why
the student should not be expelled. After presentation of the
evidence or receipt of the hearing officers report, the Board
shall decide the issue of guilt and take such action as it finds
appropriate.

Extra-Curricular Code of Conduct

A. ACTIVITIES
1. Attendance
Students participating in activities must be in attendance at
school at least half of the school day (four periods) of any day
they are to participate, perform or compete. If the practice,
performance or contest occurs during a weekend, the student
must be in attendance for at least half of the school day
preceding that practice, performance or contest.
2. School Rule Violation
Any school infraction that results in suspension from school will
also result in the students suspension from the activity at least
until the student is properly reinstated in school.
3. Alcohol/Drug Use
Any student who is a member of a recognized activity and who is
identified by a school staff member as drinking, possessing or
using alcohol/drugs will be given a minimum suspension from the
activity for 60 school days. The student may reduce the penalty
by 30 days by choosing to enroll in and successfully complete an
50

alcohol/drug counseling program approved by the high school

administration. A representative of that program upon the
students completion must notify the principal, or a designee. A
repeat of the incident, whenever it may occur, will result in
suspension from the activity for the remainder of the school year.
4. Fighting or Assault
Any student involved in an activity who is involved in a fight or
assault will be, as a result, suspended from the activity for a
minimum of an additional five school days over and above the
penalty resulting from the infraction of the school rules. The
severity of the incident or a repeat of an incident may determine,
in a review by the Athletic/Activity Board of Review, if suspension
from the activity for the year will take place.
5. Destruction or Damage to Property
Any student involved in an activity who is involved in the
destruction or damage of property will be suspended from the
activity for a minimum of an additional five school days over and
above the penalty for the infraction of the school rules and will
pay restitution. A second such incident, whenever it occurs, will
result in removal from the activity for the remainder of the year
and will also include restitution.
6. Club or Contest Rules
Violation of specific approved and distributed activity/contest
rules other than those stated in this discipline code will be
handled by the coach or sponsor in charge. The infractions will
be punished as set forth in the specific club/activity rules and
regulations.
7. Eligibility
Any student participating in an IHSA activity practice, festival,
contest, performance or production must abide by the IHSA
Eligibility Rules as follows:
a.

A student must pass 20 credit hours of high school work per

week. This is equivalent to four full credit courses. This
means a student must be in good standing in four academic
courses.

b.

A student must have passed and received credit toward

graduation for 20 credit hours of high school work for the
entire previous semester to be eligible at all during the
ensuing semester. This means a student must have passing
grades in four courses at the semester.

If ineligible according to these criteria, then a student may not

participate. Eligibility runs from Monday through Saturday.

ATHLETICS
1. Statement of Philosophy
West Aurora High School believes strongly in the value of extracurricular activities. One of the most valuable outcomes is the
mental, physical and social development of the students who
represent West Aurora High School through the participation in
athletics and activities. Participation in extra-curricular activities,
however, is a privilege and proper behavior is emphasized in the
program. It is important to have good representatives who
engage in healthy behaviors. Therefore, the following Code of
Conduct shall be enforced to assist in this effort.
2. Code of Conduct
Participation in athletics and activities is a privilege. As members
of an athletic team, club or as participants in an activity, students
accept the responsibility of serving as representatives of West
Aurora High School and its community. Such participation carries
increased expectations beyond those applicable in the daily
classroom situation. The Extra-Curricular Code of Conduct is
established for young people taking part in the program.
Once signed, the Code of Conduct is considered to be in effect
24 hours per day and 12 months a year. This signed document
will be in effect and will be kept on file during the students entire
high school career at West Aurora High School. Annually,
students participating in co-curricular activities will be required to
sign a form agreeing to adhere to this Code of Conduct.
3. Attendance
The Athletic Department expects its athletes to attend practice
regularly and adhere to specific attendance requirements for
each sport. District 129 firmly believes that if an athlete is to
attain their fullest potential, daily attendance at practice is
essential. Non-attendance may result in suspension from
contests and/or dismissal from the squad/team. Athletes may not
participate in practice or contests unless present at school for at
least four (4) periods. If an absence on the day of competition is
unexcused (even for a portion of the day), athletes may not be
eligible for competition.
4. Academics
The IHSA states that athletes must meet academic requirements
in order to be eligible for IHSA athletic competition. The IHSA
policy requires that athletes pass 2.5 credits to be eligible.
Grades are checked weekly during each athletic season. Any
athlete not passing 2.5 credits in a given week will be ineligible
for competition for the following week. Appearing on the
probation list for four (4) consecutive weeks may result in
suspension from athletics until the athlete is no longer on
52

probation. Any athlete not passing 2.5 credits in a semester will

be ineligible for the following semester.
5.

Points of Emphasis for Athletes

a. Athletes and parents should read and understand the Code
of Conduct that is included on the parent permit form.
b.

Athletes may participate in only one sport at a time. An

athlete may not quit an athletic team to participate on
another athletic team during the same season without
permission from both coaches.

c.

Athletes must have a valid physical examination each year

to be eligible to participate in a sport. Physicals are valid for
395 days. The physical must be valid for the entire sport
season.

d.

An athlete who receives treatment from a doctor because of

an injury must bring a written doctors release to the trainer
before returning to practice or competition.

Athletes must pay annual user fees to participate in a sport. The

fee for the first sport is $85. The second sport is $55. The third
sport is $25.00.
Acknowledgement System
Another part of the PBIS system is the use of consistent positive
reinforcement of appropriate behavior. Staff members who observe
students demonstrating BLACKHAWK PRIDE as defined in the hallway
behavior matrix will issue a Blackhawk Buck in acknowledgement of
their appropriate behavior. Research shows that positive reinforcement
is one of the best ways to not only change poor behavior, but also to
maintain appropriate behavior. The West Aurora High School staff is
committed to making sure that all students who demonstrate
BLACKHAWK PRIDE will receive acknowledgement.
