Introduction
Management theory and practice has been the subject of many books andpublications and it sometimes becomes all too academic and theoretical. Whatabout the ‘new’ manager who has progressed through the technical area andnow feels ready to step into management? What frequently happens is that anorganization is in a dilemma: On the one hand, they do not want to lose theservices of a valued employee, but on the other hand, they cannot willy-nillypromote him to a management position. The fact of the matter is that this person needs to acquire a new set of skillsand all his technical expertise is no guarantee that he’ll make a success in themanagement. In fact, history has shown that many I/T, financial and communityspecialist people who are promoted in this fashion do not make a success inthe management field. So what has the organization done? They have lost a very good technicalperson and gained a poor manager. The situation is if the technical person does not get promoted, he may leave theorganization and if he does get promoted, he needs to develop a whole new setof management skills to succeed. An effort is made by
