Aftergraduating,heworkedforNovosti,thenspenttwoyearsinIndiaasaninterpreterandpublicrelationsofficerwithSovietRefmeriesConstructions.HereturnedtoMoscowin1965toworkforNovosti,servingasEconomicEditorfortheHindi,UrduandEnglishEditi9nsofSovietlandMagazine.In1969hewentbacktoIndiaandcontinuedpropagandaeffortsforNovostiinNewDelhi,workingoutoftheSovietEmbassyinadepartmentcalledResearchandCounter-Propaganda.Duetohisgrowingdisgust,hebe-gantoplandefection..InFebruaryof1970hedisguisedhimselfasahippiecompletewithbeadsandwigandjoinedatourgrouptoescapetoAthens.HecontactedtheUnitedStatesEmbassyand,afteralongdebriefingbyU.S.Intelligence,wasgrantedasylumandwenttoCanada.InCanada,hestudiedpoliticalscienceattheUniversityofTorontofortwoyears,taughtRussianlanguageandliteratureandin1972washiredbytheCanadianBroadcastingCorporation'sInternationalServiceasaProducer/Announcer,broadcastingtotheSovietUnion.TheK.G.B.forcedhimoutofthejobin1976,sohebeganfree-lancejournalismandworkedonavarietyofprojects.TodayheisapoliticalanalystforPANORAMAinLosAngeles.Heismarried,andhastwochildren.Heistheauthoroftwoyetunpublishedbooks.
