October 2009at the Arsenale in Venice, place of age-old navigation, from galleys of yore tocurrent wifi systems, saw an innovative mix dedicated to the themes of the netand to digital citizens, and how everyday life aspects (from social networks tocivil service, from the e-commerce to tourism, the latter in particular is veryimportant for the city of Venice) are faced in the net and with the net. Saturdaythe 24

was the day dedicated to bloggers, with the non-conventional form of the BarCamp; there were spaces dedicated to the most active onlinecommunities and to the development of new applications, and also Venetianchildren and teenagers with their own view for the future of their city: Venicewants to be more and more active and protagonist of its innovation.Inside this “container” we provide a special mixture in order to host all theprotagonists of the web, all the people who deal with facilities - such as infirms - and it is also thought for those who are creative, such as writers,Facebook programmers, iPhone widget creators, for politics and directorswho manage and promote territorial innovative actions. Venice suggested some innovations - digital citizenship, technologicalinnovation, sustainable tourism, innovation in the PAs, social medias andcommunication, web occupations - but, in the end, we have found ourselvesinvolved in the development of iPhone applications, eating “Italian wholeroasted pig” which has been tagged with the QR-code, and involved indebates with primary and secondary schools about the future of the city, tryingto understand the role of counterinformation in the Italian region of Abruzzo, imaging our Arsenale as some Italian Docklands and asking not to close thedoors of the Arsenale becase Facebook developers wanted to spend the nightthere. In these 3 days it was 2000 of us, if numbers still matter.

The Project
Venice is a traditionally open city, which has been influenced by manypopulations and civilizations: it is a city that never stops and, thanks to what thePublic Authority did and to the frequent visitors of the net about this area, it canbe considered as the first city that got aware of the creation of the digitalcitizens’ new status. The citizens do not want to be passive subjects but wantto play an active part in the society.Digital Technology has revolutionized Italians’ way to get informed. The use of Internet and satellite tv is growing more and more. Being well informed aboutpublic interest matters means to play and active part in the life of a community. This is what it means to be a citizen. Today, the connection between Internetand information (and politics) awakens interest and attention more than it did inthe past.We have decided to let Venice become a great laboratory for innovation, and togive the people of the net the opportunity to find their ideal place. “
The net is a real revolution: I think that the evolution of the broadband can be compared tothe effects of the steam revolution in the nineteenth century
”, says Michele Vianello, one of the promoters of the event and manager of the Vega Technological Parc, “
and the Arsenale, wired with optical fibres for the people of the net, is the ideal place where to start new trips: a great chance to inaugurate a new world
”. This is the reason why Venice, thanks to its own cosmopolitan mentality, maybecome famous for innovation.
