Escalier

A lovely little sock for lovely feet. I designed this for a friend of mine with
diabetes, so I wanted something that was not too bumpy or rubbed her feet too
much. Supposedly wool is the best fibre for diabetic feet, as it is warm and has
natural wicking properties. Put this all together to get Escalier.

Size: to fit a women’s medium sized foot (about size 8 shoe)

Yarn: Hill Country Yarns Sweet Feet in Periwinkle (100% Merino wool)

Gauge: 8 st/inch (yes, I actually measured it)

Needles: 2.5 mm DPNs

Pattern:
Cuff:
Cast on 60 st (18st on Needle 1, 24 st on Needle 2 and 18st on Needle 3) and join for
working in the round. Work in k1tbl, p1 rib for as long as you like (I did about 0.5
inches).

Leg:
K15, follow chart, K15.
Continue above, following the chart for as long as you want. I did 5 pattern repeats
(about 4.5 inches).

Heel Flap:
K15, turn work, P30. Hold remaining stitches (30 stitches from chart) on spare needle.
Working back and forth on the heel flap as follows:
Row 1: *K1, sl1, continue from *
Row 2: Sl1, purl to end.
Continue Rows 1 and 2 for a total of 30 rows.

Turn Heel
Row 1: Knit across 17 st – ssk k1, turn
Row 2: Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1 turn
Row 3: Sl1, knit to 1 st before gap, k1, turn
Row 4: Sl1, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn

Repeat 3 and 4 until there are 18 st remaining (end with purl row)

Knit across 18 st, then pick up and knit 16 st on edge, with another needle knit across
held st (will be row 1 of chart) and with last dpn pick up and knit 16 st on other edge,
then knit 9 st from needle 1.

Knit 1 round.

Next round:
Knit to last 3 st on needle then k2 tog, k1. Knit across instep, and at needle 3 k1, ssk
R2: knit

Repeat decreases every second round until there are 60 st left (15 st on needle 1; 30 st
on needle 2; 15 st on needle 3).

Work even until foot measures about 7.5 - 8 inches.

2
Toe:
Round 1: knit to last 3 st on needle1 k2tog k1; Needle 2: k1 ssk, knit to last 3 st then
k2tog k1; then on needle 3, k1 ssk, knit to end
R2: knit

Repeat last 2 rows until 20 st remain.

Graft toe however you see fit. You can do decreases farther if you like, but I find it
makes the toe too pointy.

Wear!!
