February 2010 - Sydney, AustraliaWith the increasing uptake of social media, the citizen voice is increasing in volume. Traditional actiongroups have now been given an online megaphone and many are using it to demand a greater role inself determination on an increasing range of issues, especially at a grass roots level.Policy makers and community engagement practitioners are responding to this call, implementingmeasures to strengthen community involvement in policy and projects. They are also seeking todevelop new ideas and directions to advance the idea of ‘social issues and government being for thepeople, by the people’.More and more community facing projects are reaching those most affected by issues by engagementthrough a medium that best meets the needs and interests of that group. “Social media and online communities are enabling the rise of a collective voice. More and morepeople are finding a vehicle to advocate, to communicate and to share stories and opinions online. For an organisation, this can be a very successful process for listening and engagement. But, thereare some hard and fast lessons we need to be aware of when moving into online,” said KaraleeEvans, Communications and Partnerships Manager, headspace.headspace’s foray into social media throughFacebook ,Twitter, andvideo content, along with the methodology behind these approaches, will be used as a basis for an interactive session at anupcomingforumtaking place in Melbourne in March 2010.Other novel approaches, particularly in regards to appreciative narrative, grassroots communityengagement, marginalised and outraged communities and place based community engagement willalso be discussed by representatives from all three tiers of government as well as other communitybased practitioners.Social media is also being used as an effective promotional channel for the event through the use of LinkedIn,Twitterand Facebook.
