It can be a pain driving allaround town viewing apartments, listening to sales pitches and col-lecting applications. But with two major helpers —The Daily Tar Heel Housing Fairand HeelsHousing.com — findinga new home might have become alittle easier.
DtH Husig Fai
Come for the free food, and stay for the chance to find your newhome. About 40 housing vendors willfill up the Great Hall on Feb. 3 from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for The Daily TarHeel Housing Fair. At the fair, students will havethe opportunity to get informationabout multiple housing options both on and off campus.“It’s kind of like speed dating,”said Kevin Schwartz, general man-ager of the DTH.Students will be able to ask ques-tions of vendors and collect housingapplications from various locations. The fair eliminates the timeit takes to map out and drive todifferent locations for a preview,Schwartz said.“There’s nowhere else you cango and see that many places in anhour.”The fair also makes it easier forhousing vendors to advertise to alarge audience — in the past, the fairhas attracted hundreds of students.Kristen Liebers, a member of the DTH marketing team whohelped organize the fair, said thatshe hopes attendance will increaseand that the possibility of finding anew place to live is only one reasonto attend the fair.Free food will be provided fromChick-fil-A, Dunkin’ Donuts, CafeCarolina and Bojangles’. Fresh pop-corn will also be available. Additionally, this is the first yearthe housing fair will feature liveperformances. The Loreleis and Tar Heel Voicesare scheduled to perform, and theUniversity mascot Rameses willmake an appearance. They’re also trying to spread the word through Facebook groups anda contest where students guess thenumber of balloons in a glass casein the Union. The winner of the contest, which will be announced at the fair, willreceive a $30 gift card to the Streetsat Southpoint.Liebers said the fair will providea great opportunity to compare dif-ferent housing options and get agood grasp of what Chapel Hill andsurrounding towns have to offer.“They should attend so they canfall in love with their new home.”

If you can’t make it to the housingfair, the DTH operates a Web site atHeelsHousing.com, which lets stu-dents search for a place to stay with-out having to leave their room. The site allows users to searchavailable listings based on the dis-tance from the Pit, the number of bedrooms or the rent of each unitper month, excluding utilities. Advanced features on the siteallow searches for locations basedon access to bus lines, as well asminimum or maximum squarefootage. The “Roommate Board” offersresidents a place to post noticesand find potential roommates orsublets. An “Exploring the Neighborhood”feature gives locations for usefuldestinations in the area, includinggrocery stores, post offices and carrepair shops.
