Where is God?
Joseph WinstonOctober 22, 2006
Mark 10:35-45
32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way,and they were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Againhe took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Weare going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed tothe chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death andwill hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, floghim and kill him. Three days later he will rise.” 35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do forus whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What is it you want me todo for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand andone at your left, in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know whatyou are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with thebaptism that I am baptized with?” 39 They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said1
to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which Iam baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is notmine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 When the tenheard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called themand said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognizeas their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 Butit is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must beyour servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life aransom for many.”2
Grace and peace are gifts for you from God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Where is God? If I asked you that question right now, how would you answer? It is no fair asking the person next to you to see what they have to say. Right now, where is God located?Let me give you three common answers to this often-asked question. Do youthink that God is off somewhere in heaven, earning a well-deserved rest after cre-ating the universe? Do you picture God as a great grandfatherly figure sitting ina rocking chair, watching over us in heaven? Or perhaps, do you feel that God isalways interfering with your life and should remember to mind God’s own busi-ness?Determining where God is or is not is one of the most basic questions that any-one can answer. Your response to this simple question lets others know quite a lotabout your relationship with God. For example, if you happen to think that Godcreated the universe and then left the scene to let the universe follow God’s pre-ordained rules, then you would generally think that God does not make laws justto break them. This attitude is perfectly fine as long as everything is going well.Your good health and riches would then be nothing more than God’s perfect plansplaying out in your life. What then would happen if your child is in the emergencyroom and is about to die? Can you pray to God for a miracle? If you follow thismodel to its logical conclusion, you cannot ask God to intercede on the behalf of
