Presentation
i.
Harrison:
You mentioned you will have performance type pieces. Whatsort of performances do you expect? It’ll probably be more like speechesand short sketches rather than full on performances.ii.
Scott:
You mentioned the description of the booths, can you go into moredetail about that? We’re planning on having about alternative bodyimages, safe sex, BDSM, female orgasms.iii.
Scott:
Can you elaborate on the “how-to” booths? That was just an ideathat was suggested, but we haven’t solidified any yet.iv.
Harrison:
The booths will be manned by GU students? Yes.v.
William:
What time will this be held? 7-9 pm.vi.
Scott:
In terms of the posters/decorations for the event, can you describethe nature of the decorations or booths? That’ll depend largely on the booth hosts, but it’s supposed to be fun, colorful. There will be someimages that may be considered “out-there”, but nothing obscene.ii.
Discussion
i.
Harrison:
I don’t like the fact that they can’t tell us what the booths aregoing to be.ii.
Senyo:
They are a very responsible group that is always responsive to our communications, so I’ll make sure they know our concerns.iii.
Andy:
I think that the point of sex positive week is to have opendiscourse on this topic, so I don’t see a problem with they booths theyhave proposed.iv.
Scott:
While it is important to keep in mind their mission, it is alsoimportant to keep in mind the mission of the University. I don’t feelcomfortable voting on an event of this sensitive nature without knowingwhat exactly will be presented.v.
Harrison:
Last year, GU Pride sponsored this week and there were acouple of events that raised concerns from both campus and non-campusorganizations.vi.
Senyo:
I hear what you’re saying about the appropriateness concern, but Iwouldn’t want to disillusion you into thinking that this approval would letthem do absolutely anything that they want. They do have to run their ideas by us. Further, it’s important to keep in mind that the Access toBenefits policy exists specifically for this purpose: that not everything isin keeping with the Catholic identity, and they are empowered to voicetheir ideas.vii.
William:
What I think that this comes down to is whether or notwe trust the organization. If we micromanage the group that hinders their creativity and freedom. Senyo tells us that they are very responsible, sowe should give them the benefit of the doubt.iii.
Motion by
Andy to approve with the stipulation that anything Senyo findsinappropriate is brought before the commission for further review.iv.
