The Scentsy Story
The story o Scentsy began witha simple idea – a sae, wicklessalternative to scented candles – andquickly grew into one o the mostsuccessul direct selling companies inthe industry.Scentsy was born in 2003 whenColette Gunnell and Kara Eganbegan selling decorative warmersdesigned to melt scented wax withthe heat o a light bulb insteado using a traditional wick andfame. At a home show in SaltLake City, entrepreneur OrvilleThompson happened to have a booth across rom theirs. Orville, sensing there wassomething special about the wickless candle concept, brought a handul o testers hometo his wie, Heidi. While Orville was out, Heidi introduced the testers to her motherand sister. When Orville returned hours later, these women were enjoying the testers,laughing and sharing memories.Orville and Heidi were intrigued by the way ragrance could bring such powerulemotions and memories to the surace, especially when it could happen without the saetyrisks or soot residue o a burning candle.Within months, Orville and Heidihad bought the company and broughtScentsy home to Meridian, Idaho.Scentsy became a party plan companyin July, 2004 when the Thompsonsjoined the Direct Selling Association(DSA) and enrolled Scentsy’s rstIndependent Consultant. Since then,the company has enjoyed an averageannual growth rate o over 300% andnow employs nearly 500 people atthree locations, with annual revenueso more than $200 million.In June, 2009 Scentsy was honored with the DSA’s rst-ever Rising Star Award or itsremarkable growth and commitment to ethical business practices. But what really uelsScentsy’s success is the more than 55,000 Independent Scentsy Consultants who share theScentsy experience throughout all 50 United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Canada.
