his First Sunday of Lent reminds usthat life is a constant struggle against the devil. But we are expected to faceup to the source of all evil in the power of God’s Word and in our determination to be faithful to Him. Jesus’ victory in all tempta-tions encourages us to reject any compro-mise with the devil.Today is also the 24th National Migrants’Sunday, a day when the Church invites us toremember with special love and concern allour brothers and sisters who have migrated either from the provinces to the cities or fromtheir homeland to work in more affluent na-tions. Let our internal migrants and the Fili- pino Overseas Contract Workers and their  families be today the object of our speciallove and prayers.

But there he became anation great, strong and nu-merous. When the Egyptiansmaltreated and oppressed us,imposing hard labor upon us,we cried to the Lord, the Godof our fathers, and he heardour cry and saw our afflic-tion, our toil, and our oppres-sion. He brought us out of Egypt with his strong handand outstretched arm, withterrifying power, with signsand wonders; and bringing usinto this country, he gave usthis land flowing with milkand honey. A proclamation from theholy Gospel accordingto Luke
 All–
Glory to you, Lord!Filled with the Holy Spi-rit, Jesus returned from theJordan and was led by theSpirit into the desert for fortydays, to be tempted by thedevil. He ate nothing duringthose days, and when theywere over he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, com-mand this stone to becomebread.” Jesus answered him,“It is written, ‘One does notlive on bread alone.’ ” Thenhe took him up and showedhim all the kingdoms of theworld in a single instant. Thedevil said to him, “I shall giveto you all this power andglory; for it has been handedover to me, and I may give itto whomever I wish. All thiswill be yours, if you worshipme.” Jesus said to him in re-ply, “It is written: ‘You shallworship the Lord, your God,and him alone shall youserve.’ ”Then he led him to Jerusa-lem, made him stand on theparapet of the temple, andsaid to him, “If you are theSon of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is writ-ten: ‘He will command hisangels concerning you, toguard you,’ and: ‘With theirhands they will support you, lest you dash your foot againsta stone.’ ” Jesus said to him inreply, “It also says, ‘You shallnot put the Lord, your God tothe test.’ ”abide in the shadow of the Al-mighty, say to the Lord, “ Myrefuge and fortress, my God,in whom I trust.”

Today St. Paul reminds usthat a real believer is onewho treasures the faith in his/ her heart, professes it with-out fear, and lives in accor-dance with the faith pro- fessed.

A proclamation from theLetter of Paul to the Ro-mans
Brothers and sisters: Whatdoes Scripture say? “Theword is near you, in yourmouth and in your heart” –that is, the word of faith thatwe preach – for, if you confesswith your mouth that Jesus isLord and believe in your heartthat God raised him from thedead, you will be saved. Forone believes with the heartand so is justified, and oneconfesses with the mouth andso is saved. For the Scripture says,“No one who believes in himwill be put to shame.” Forthere is no distinction betweenJew and Greek; the sameLord is Lord of all, enrichingall who call upon him. For“everyone who calls on thename of the Lord will besaved.”
