Current plans are for the council to take the crucial vote at a
special meeting called for July 1
that could move the infill process
past the point of no return.
Councillor Ron Bradley has
given notice that during next
weeks normal monthly council
meeting he will move to defer
that vote.
Its an olive branch to councillors to enable them to support
ratepayers, Mr Bradley said.

Is Rommel OK?
Where is Rommel?
A majority of my bridge clubs friends lost money
after Alan Bond stripped Bell Resources (Bonds
cup full of risks, POST, June 6).
Cora was incensed the old furphy of him painting the dingo on the mill in North Fremantle was
resurrected.
But Joyce, to her credit, was worried about his
dog Rommel,
She had been at a Cottesloe council meeting late
last year about the Vera View dog beach when
Bond spoke about taking the beast for a swim.

Feelings run
hot on campus
UWA staff and students agitated heavily to stop the controversial Australia
Consensus Centre from
being set up on the
Crawley campus.
Their campaign
focused on the new
policy research centre being linked to
Danish professor Bjorn
Lomborg, who was to
be an adjunct (unpaid)
professor, said to be a
climate contrarian.
UWA showed its
climate change credentials this week by
being one of seven
Australia-wide locations taking part in
the European Union
Climate Diplomacy
Day in Australia,
one of several events
organised ahead of
climate talks in Paris
later this year.
As part of the event
on Wednesday, a
documentary film, The
Climate Blueprint, was
followed by a Q&A
session with a panel
of experts.
Among the scheduled speakers was
Patrick Kedemos.
Mr Kedemos was
also the CEO of Anaeco,
the Perth company
that designed the technology to turn most
household rubbish
into compost, recyclables or bio-gas, which
is being developed in
the DiCom plant in

Strings attached to
$19.5m Subi deal
By LLOYD GORMAN
A deal to sell a hectare of the
4.4ha China Green site to an
American company for $19.5million has strings attached.
A glitch in redevelopment
plans means the Station Street
Market will stay open a month
longer than expected.
Stallholders and customers
had been told the weekend
market would cease trading next
weekend.
But that has been postponed
to July 26 because of a hold-up
with plans to clear the site and
build a $96million four-storey
shopping centre.
The closing has date change
several times.
Market manager Chris Ryding
said the property owners could
have pressed ahead with demolition.
But they decided, because of
this delay, that they wanted the
market to keep going for as long
as possible, he said.
They want people to be able
to continue their livelihoods for
as long as possible and for our
customers to enjoy the market.
Mr Ryding said stallholders appreciated the extension.
It is giving them extra time to
fit out shops if that is what they
are doing, or other stuff.
Mr Ryding said there had been
a big upswing in the number of
market customers recently.
Puppy love These abandoned animals are now in the safe hands
of a Shenton Park dog refuge foster carer.
Pups dumped
Five pups found abandoned
in a cardboard box have been
fostered out by the Shenton
Park dog refuge.
Rangers from Victoria Park
council called the refuge after
they retrieved the staffy crosses
from a residents front yard last
Thursday afternoon
A council spokeswoman said
rangers thought the pup three
males and two females were
about three weeks old.
A Victoria Park ranger took
them home as he had a heat pad
and puppy milk available and
was willing to watch over them
during the night, she said.

Who gave them permission to do this?
Surely a major change
like this demands wide
consultation among and
approval from the university community, and
perhaps even the state
government.
As one who has taken a
close interest in the university for more than 60
years, I was never aware
of any plan to mutilate
our swan.
At least they werent

5. The management is
persisting with its unpopular plan to destroy the best
part of the irreplaceable
Underwood Avenue bush
it owns and sell it off for
expensive real estate.
6. Needless to say, the
management eagerly
embraced the opportunity offered by the Abbott
government to deregulate
university fees.
As the management has
mutilated the university
crest, why not abandon it
altogether?
I can offer a new one
appropriate to the managements apparent new
direction.
It has a vulture to replace the poor crippled

Really? This is what our socalled democracy has come
to?
Where the majority interest of
the people they serve is second
to political point scoring?
I hope Mr Day has enough
integrity to review and decide
on the facts, and not from the
perspective of political grandstanding.
I hope the Labor Party also
sees that its fortunes are linked
to transparent democratic processes and doesnt use our suburbs as a political football.
I hope our local Churchlands
MP, Sean LEstrange, has the
strength and courage to advise
Mr Day on the circumstances,
and that his support for rejecting
this amendment isnt a hollow
political gesture.

Iona students
in the pink
Normally surrounded by a
sea of sky blue and navy, students from Iona Presentation
College will be adorned with
pink on Tuesday, all in the
name of charity.
An initiative of the student
leadership council, staff and
students from Years 7 to 12 are
being encouraged to add pink
to their clothing for a gold coin
donation.
Year 12 student and student council executive officer
Eleanor Hampton said money
was also being raised through
a cake stall and the sale of pink
hair ribbons.
We are raising money and
awareness for worthy causes
such as Breast Cancer Care WA,
Educating Girls Globally and
Presentation Missions supported
by the college, she said.
This is the third year the
student council has celebrated
our own annual Iona Womens
Day, but this year we are really
stepping it up.
We are creating a sense of
awareness and raising money
for charities which resonate
with our student leadership
council, and continuing to create a sense of community here
at Iona.

Now and then? How the balcony looks now, left, and the screen
a Cottesloe property owner wants to have installed.
Clare Taylor, extended their
balcony nearly five years ago
she had not asked for screening.
I had not realised the
significant impact their new
development would have on my
property, Dr Hewson-Bower
wrote.
On Tuesday night she said
that she had tried to live with
the situation.
Ive had architects and engineers working on this for nine
months, Dr Hewson-Bower
said. I have no desire to cause
any grief to my neighbours.
Im pleading with you: I
thought I had a right to privacy.
Mr Taylor said he had learnt
about Dr Hewson-Bowers
plans only last Friday and
he was getting harassed by
council workers.
The screen would block winter sun until late afternoon,
Mr Taylor said.
If she leaves her blinds
and curtains open, thats her
problem.
Mr Taylor said he had no objections if Dr Hewson-Bower
wanted to put pot plants or
olive trees on her balcony to
help solve her problem.
Mr Angers said he and other
councillors had inspected the
properties.
There would be quite a bit
of solar loss, he said about
the proposed screen.
It would be like being in
a birdcage.
A suggestion by councillor
Jack Walsh that obscured
glass screens be installed
instead was lost.
Its just a shame, after a
considerable time, all this
comes to a head, Mr Walsh
said.
The matter will go before
Mondays full council meeting.

Surf club
ready for
hefty fees
The cost to lease the new surf
club at City Beach will more
than double to about $24,000-ayear, City of Perth Life Saving
Club officials say.
But the club had known about
the charge for about four years
and had accounted for it, president Grant Trew said.
It will be calculated on the
same basis as other clubs in the
town, Mr Trew said.
It will be a bigger facility,
and there will be a brand-new
gym.
Some people think the
club should not have to pay
anything.
The new clubhouse is expected to open on October 1.
It is part of an $18million development at the beach that will
include three restaurants and
picnic and barbecue areas.
Mr Trew said the membership cost for an active surf club
member would increase to $180
a year.
If they do five or six patrols
a year, that will be reduced by
50%, he said.
He said the fee and others
for ski and board storage were
comparable with those of other
clubs along the coast.

men. It soon filled with typhoid
epidemic patients from the
Goldfields.
Orphaned children were
taken to picnics in the grounds
but, despite its name, children
did not stay there except for a
very brief period in World War
II, when the army requisitioned
the buildings.
Convalescing children were
catered for at Lady Lawley
home nearby, established
using funds raised as a farewell present to the wife of the
departing governor in 1903.
A grand new building with
verandahs and a turret, a womens convalescent ward called
the Meath wing, was built in
front of Ministering Childrens
Convalescent Home in 1909,
in 1963.
The buildings were kept in
good condition and 20 years
later were converted as Wearne
Hostel for 50 people.
Big extensions with a tower on
the end of the new section were
later made for the frail aged.
By then the home was supported and run by a board involving the four local councils,
who had the land transferred to
them under conditional tenure,
for aged care, in 2009.
The council group now working on a vision for the site had
to take into account the heritage value of the buildings, the
restrictions on the title and the
fact that the current lease still
had time to run, Cottesloe councillors were told this week.

that this is not the reasoning of all who oppose samesex marriage: some people
simply dont want marriage
laws to change for traditional
reasons.
But when was marriage last
truly traditional?
The rise of churchless
weddings and divorces demonstrates that marriage is
evolving.
Marriage doesnt require
any sort of real faith and has
become mainstream.
Heck, a Muslim and a
Buddhist can legally have a
Christian wedding.
If marriage requires no
proof of faith, why require
proof of gender?
Mr OConnor questioned
whether I might be heterophobic, which was insulting
and unfair.
I have no problem with anyones sexual preference this
would be highly hypocritical
of me.
What I do have a problem
with is anyone who promotes
inequality or intolerance of
any kind.
I support equality, love and
respect. I support marriage
rights for all.

Coming
up roses in
Nedlands
A team of Nedlands council
gardeners has been recognised for its work at the Peace
Memorial Rose Garden in
Stirling Highway, Nedlands.
They were all presented with
the Pride of Workmanship Award
by the Rotary Club of Dalkeith
for the gardens outstanding
presentation.
Chris Cole from the Dalkeith
Rotary Club said: Everyone
admires the rose garden and
thinks it looks wonderful.
We wondered who actually
did all the work so we called
the council and were put on to
the parks team. They do a wonderful job. The way they keep
the roses blooming so much is
fantastic.
The team was invited to a
Rotary dinner to receive their
award.
Nedlands Mayor Max Hipkins
said: Its a very well-deserved
award. The team does a great job
tending the gardens and when
the roses bloom they always look
stunning.
The garden holds a special
place in the hearts of residents
for its beautiful display of blooms
and foliage in meticulously
tended grounds.
The team has a weekly maintenance schedule of mowing the
lawn, weeding the garden beds
and dead-heading the roses.
In July, the roses are heavily
pruned and fertilised to encourage the bushes to burst into
bloom in October.
The Nedlands team that keeps the roses blooming is, back from left, Layf Erickson, Ali Aydin, Luis de Sancha, John Render, and front, Bruce Tregonning, Stefan Polglaze, Glen Burwood, Clayton Chansaw, Lauro Pinca and John Taylor.

Stphanie Caulier is no
stranger to a cold winter.
Born and raised in
Belgium, she knows there is
little more comforting than
a warm wool jumper when
the temperature chills.
Now based in Cottesloe,
Stphanie and her team
of nearly 20 women knit
pieces that are sold around
Australia and online.
Stphanies knitters are
from all over Perth.
They have to be
passionate because we are
dealing with thousands of
kilos of wool! Stphanie
said.
Each piece is handmade
to order and the winter
collection includes long
thick scarves, oversized
jumpers and cosy cardigans.
Using coloured wools
as well as traditional
winter hues, the pieces are
contemporary yet highquality, meaning they will
last through winters to
come.
Knitting is almost second
nature to Stphanie.
I started knitting when
I was five or six because all
the women in my family are
creative, she said.
Even in school in
Belgium we learnt to knit.
To pursue a career in
fashion, she tried short
courses in design, including
a stint at the prestigious

It was a bit
overwhelming at the time,
she said.

The ladies had
a good result last
Tuesday in the undercover pennants
against Osborne Park,
picking up three aggregate points.
The rink of Dot

Margaret Gawler
and Betsy Tapley
went down by one,
but the other rink of
Alannah Brindley,
bowling
Deirdre Duncan,
Lesley Langley and
Pam Forrester made
up for it, winning
17/11.
Two teams managed to win both their
games in Thursdays
three-bowl pairs.
Robbie Blythe and
Mac Hughes had huge
wins in both games
to take out the major
prize, while runnersup John Hall and
Leigh Fitzpatrick had
one comfortable win
and one narrow win.
With his regular
partner now a tourist, Malcolm Moore
teamed up with Kim

claim the title of the
odd couple but also
to win the cup and

Meanwhile, Phil

and Colin Graves
played scroungers.
Phil opened the
scoring in a blaze of
glory then went into
hibernation, leaving
Vern and Colin to the
battle.
It came down to
a one-bowl suddendeath end. Colin fell
2m short with his bowl
while Vern, with little pressure, drew a
toucher to take the
game.
In Saturday pairs,
Dot Leeson and Colin
Graves had it all
over Dave Leeson
and his assistant
Alan Brindley for
the first six ends, but
then Dave and Alan
cleared away to a fourshot Mars Bars win.
The triples game
between Ray Fells,
Bob Porter and Rod

triple of Ted Brown,
Pam Forrester and
Ray Preston saw
the Hickling team
finish up with the
Snickers.
It has taken a little
while, but Sunday
scroungers got started
at long last.
Vern Jones outplayed Alan Brindley
to win by 18, while on
the other rink, Glen

John Hall (22pts).
Vern beat Glen in
the final to be crowned

The owners threw in a couple of alpacas when they sold their Caversham
property for $3.7million.
.
The former home of Texas oil tycoon H.L. Hunt is listed for $24.9 million.
Get the party started: when finished, this Cottesloe home will have its own nightclub with a dancing pole, bar,
lighting and dance floor. It could cost about $3million to complete the four-level house opposite the Blue Duck.
house was sold in the first week for
$3.7million. It was a great result
given the average selling price in
the area is $450,000. Meanwhile
in Nedlands, wine talks: a buyer
offered six bottles of Grange for
85 Meriwa Street, which went for
$1,145,000. There were three
offers and the Grange got the deal
over the line, Ms Sullivan said.

from the application received
that the nature and extent
of the interest held by the

was different.
This week the spokesman
referred the POST to the previous answer and said councillors had not mentioned an
interest in common.
Meanwhile, Churchlands
MP Sean LEstrange replied to
questions about his advocacy
for the No campaign.
He said: My role as a

represent the views of my
constituents living in the
suburbs of City Beach and
Floreat.
In this regard I am not bound
by any local government rules
which may apply to local government councillors who are

He said this despite living
between two properties that
would be affected.
Any attempt to say that
because I live in the affected
area, I should not represent
my constituents, or comment
on the scheme amendment, is
a desperate attempt to distract

Army defensive
on Irwin move
The Defence Department is keeping quiet on which units, personnel
and assets will be relocated from
Leeuwin Barracks, Fremantle, to
Irwin Barracks in Karrakatta.
At last weeks sale announcement,
the Defence Ministers parliamentary secretary, Darren Chester, said
Defence had no further need for the
15ha Leeuwin Barracks and they would
be sold.
Residential units from Leeuwin
Barracks would be relocated to Irwin
Barracks and the site may be leased
back by Defence if the sale proceeds
before the relocation is complete,
he said.
A Defence media spokesperson said
a decision on where the Leeuwin units
would relocate to would be made in
the coming months.
The relocation of units from
Leeuwin Barracks to other Defence
sites is still in the planning stages
and therefore advice can not yet be
provided, the spokesperson said.
The POST understands the WA
University Regiment, now based at
Leeuwin, will return to to its previous
base at Irwin.

The P&C made a contribution to
the mens shed in recognition of the
work.
Principal Jayne Conley said the
arbour was a wonderful collaboration between the school and the
community.
The garden is proving a valuable
addition to the school and the arbour
provides a great focal point, she
said.
Josh Kennedy has ironed out his run-up to goal and is a force to be reckoned with in the Eagles forward line.
From there the steps he takes
are pure, and while his method
is different, it is consistent and
consistency is vital.
Returning to join Kennedy in
attack is Jack Darling, a monster
forward who has been missing
for yonks.
These two, along with the darts
Josh Hill, Dom Sheed, Xavier
Ellis, LeCras, Shuey, and Cripps,
spell danger everywhere.
Wright on Owen
S
outh Coast NSW surfer Owen Wright holds his head in disbelief after
his second perfect 10-point ride on Monday, in round five of the Fiji
Pro. Wright was spot-on the next day when he said something special
was happening out there, after another superb performance when he
scored another perfect 20 to take out the Fiji Pro surfing title. He is the
first surfer to complete two perfect 20s at the same event, and joins
legends Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson in recording the feat twice. The
competition was held at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.
