Project Description and Scope FROMLOTTOSPOTY enn Engcernt 8 Erbancen Prec LEED) From Lotto Spot (FLTS) would ke to inate the Lennox Engagement and Enhancement Project: the LEP. Working in collaboration with the LA County Road Maintenance Division and Lennox Math Science and ‘Technology Academy alsisk students, FLTS will plant over 160 trees that are dead or damaged or entirely new trees in designated periways in Lennox. Planting trees in Lennox ill create an urban forest canopy that wil create nalural shading and carbon and noise sequestration from the abutting 105 and 405 freeways. “The project wl involve three key components: Education, Engagement and Plantings. The following isa briet description of each erucial component ofthe project. 4. Education FLTS willbe working collaboratively with Lennox Math Science & Technology Academy atrisk students through our high-scheo! level through our Spaces of Bight communty-action program. The Spaces of Blight (S08) programis a high schoo! level course that teaches high school students not only to preserve their cenvironment but to take an active rol in their community's development by beautiying their neighborhoods. in ‘order to create change In neighborhoods that are in need of revitalization, students identity spaces of bight or *S08's" in their communities and throughout the course ofthe semester convert them into spaces of ight or *SOL'e’, Students have firsthand experience in studying solutions and creating innovative soltions that beautify and improve their communities, FLT will be working with teachers Ms, Vanessa Mateu and Ms. Brenda Janiaro's students to learn about the importance ofthe urban tree canopy in their urban environment. In addition, at-sisk students wile employed to assist in community engagement workshops and trainings that will demonstrate two-way engagement between students and community on how to care for trees once planted Lennox Mathemalles, Sclence, & Technology Academy (LMST Academy) serves over 500 students in grades 1912 of which 77.3% qualiy for free or reduced-price meals; an indicator of alisk youth. LMIST Academy offers a rigorous, college prep curriculum to help students achieve their postsecondary goals 2. Engagement In early 2012, FLTS was approached by LA County Road Maintenance Division to discuss a partnershig on, how to plant trees that had been removed or damaged in fow-lncome, unincorporated areas ofthe 2nd District. ‘The Division expressed concern thal when trees are placed in the parkway, many of them do not survive because residents do not water them, They expressed engagement was needed in order for community to really Invest in the trees, This is exactly where FLTS expertise in engagement and empowerment comes to play: In order thatthe trees are properly cared for and maintained, FLTS will engage in comprehensive 12 FROMLOTTOSPOT ennos Sapp tact Pj EP) “Tannox. A "aot ‘community engagement with residents and businesses, FLTS will ost three (3) community workshops to ciscuss the project and provide education for community members to care forthe trees in thelr parkway. In order to ensure the success ofthe trees durina the crucial inception period of 3 months, FLTS along with the student team will monitor trees post-planting by checking tee health, ‘and continuing to check-in with commurity members. 3. Enhancement: The Plantings FLTS along with the etudent team will be preforming the majority ofthe plantings during a 4-8 month span, depending on permiting, site prep, etc. To plant a portion of the trees, FLTS wil host @ minimum of four (4) {00 plantings in diferent areas of the community to celebrate the project and engage community to care for the tres themselves. FLTS., along with a licensed landscape architect will be working closely and collaboratively wth LA County Road Maintenance Division to create a comprehensive planting plan and dsignate the neediest and appropriate areas forthe trees, ‘The Need Lennox is a small community of approximstely 22,000 residents, including 12,000 youth from ages 0-18, who lve in a 1.3 square mile unincorporated area adjacent to the Los Angeles International Airport. The ‘community, comprised of over 91% Latino families, lives under the poverty line at a median household income ‘of $35,000, This makes Lennox one ofthe densest and poorest communities in the state n adtion, Lennox. ‘does not have adequate greenspace to provide the necassary tree canopy to create a healthy and vibrant ‘community. Lennox is affected not only by the abutting 105 and 405 Freeways but by continuous air trafic and polttion caused by the Los Angeles International Apart (LIX). Residents in Lennox and adjacent eomminiias have long suffered from Increasing air pollution. In 2010, the Air Quality Index (AQ) level for Lennox was 47.6. This 's significantly worse then the national average, $2.0'. In 2008, Carbon Monoxide (CO) [ppm] levels in Lennox measured 0.450. he national average was .334, In addlion, Particulate Matter (PM) [level in 2009 was 380. This is significantly worse than the national average of 22:17. This data clearly demonstrates "South Coast A Quatly Menagemen! The need for an urban ree canopy in Lennoxis dire ‘Stucles have proven the positive impets trees have on sequestering air pollutants and creating the necessary shadina to avoid urban heatisland effect. The Department of Energy has noted that a young tee can ‘sequester anywhere from 1.0 101.3 Ibs. carbon each year, wile a 60 year old tree can sequester over 100 bs annually’. The LEEP wil create an urban forest canopy with over 160 trees. Using this measurable, during the inception period, years 1-5, the trees will capture between 50-65 Ibs. of carbon annually. After 125 years tis estimated the urban forest canopy can eapture 1,260 Ibs. of carbon annually, this number growing significantly as the trees mature. wel IF AT-RISK YOUTH {As aforementioned, FLTS willbe employing ais youth from the Lennox Math Science & Technology ‘Academy. Ail students wil be In the Spaces of Blight Program. After complating tne education component, FLTS along with teachers vl offer employment to 15 stuclent leaders- ages 17-19-for a total of 825 hours «with an infrestin urban development to hire forthe project.
