Ohhello. lwasn’t actually going to do anintro this month but it turns out I’ve miscounted my pages. So er, thank you to all who came to our January Drag and Drop fundraising party, we raised £220 for C&R and had another brilliant night. The next two fundraisers will be as follows: Saturday March 13th with D’Astro, 2010 and Two Minute Noodles plus DJs Harry Gyration, Joy Orbison and Full Collins. Saturday April 24th aBeards end of eurotour party with some more bands whoare TBC, although one might be Executive Legs. Both these gigs will occur in the usual place, and both require you to RSVP- see the website for details or check C&R nearer the time. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6th Opportunities Ill The Common Place’s premier not-particularly-themed pop night returns for another crack at not being rubbish, having pulled a bumper crowd of two people last month because apparently most people think it’s a bad idea going into town whenit’s -5 outside and the streets of Leeds are kind of like the Olympic bobsleigh run if the Olympic bobsleigh run was lined with vintage clothing stores and branches of Greggs. Just because none of y’all had the foresight to own a bobsleigh. | hate my generation. Their latest ‘Barn Nova’ follows two previous killer cuts on Ecstatic Peace. They honestly slipstream peak Neil Young-esque Americana, Grateful Dead harmonix, old time front porch vibes, and time / space defying spectral jams akin to Acid Mothers Temple. Between them Alan Courtis & Aaron Moore have been part of orcollaborated with Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Damo Suzuki (Can), Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), Yoshimi P-Wee (Boredoms), Chris Corsano, Michael Snow, Volcano the Bear, Birchville Cat Motel and members of Avarus and Kemialliset Ystavat. TUESDAY FEBRUARY 9th at the Royal Park Cellars Doors 8pm- £3.50 The Final Sigh “200 hyperactive toddlers given instruments and locked inastudio with a paddling pool full of extra sugar high caffeine cola” Metal Hammer Arficeden “syncopated rhythms and drumming around the beat; guitar picking out strange disarrayed arpeggios and then move seamlessly through a selection of musical textures. There’s a bubbling bass-heavy jazz break, a slower widescreen prog wander, stabs of angry distortion, but all the while each pieceis a cohesive beast with little recurring themes throughout.” —Cath Aubergine Hoarder Myna “‘Rememberable Rifts’, the debut EP from progressive Leeds 3 piece Hoarder Myna, is an immensely tight, crisp sounding debut from another great UK band blurring, and expanding, the definition of Math Rock.” —Lost Children Records Omnivore More of their free-form instrumental hardboiled lo-fi progressive avant jazz. As excellent as ever, The Medusa Snare regroup with an all newline-up to kick offthe New Year. Also appearing are Leeds’ premier octopus-falling-out- of-a-tree apologists, Trapdoor Minotaur. Join them for new songs and frolics garage punk in nature. Favoured endearing indie shamble-poppers This Many Boyfriends will be appearing. They willlike you if youlike the Pastels (and youwill probably like them, too). Opening up are new band The Peterboroughs from members of The Seven Inches and Robin Osterley. If imaginative, unusually instrumented indie is your thing, make sure you don’t miss ‘em. EVARISTE GALOIS (indie punk from S.Wales) WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 17th at Bar Room Bar Plan 9 Channel 7 bring you our first night of Devil’s Advocate at Bar Room Bar, Call Lane on the 17thg February at 8pm-1am. Itis the night which promises to being you some of the best bands and solo artists around. The first night Features Leeds very own circuit bending kings of noise WRONGBOT and the greatest party band Leeds has seen, Executive Legs. This will be followed by DJ’s playing a selection of tunes to make you shiver and shake with excitement.. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 19th at The Packhorse WEIRDO GUISE presents... MAZES - This group stand head and shoulders above all the shit ‘lo-fi / DIY’ hipster bands around in droves right now. If they continue to release records to the quality of last years debut, the ‘Bowie Knives’ 7?, thenmaybe you'll hear their name in the same sentence as The Vaselines or The Clean. SPECTRALS - Heavy vibing, reverb drenched songs about chicks by a fresh-faced twenty-something and his band. Debut LP out sometime this year on Blank Dog’s Brooklyn based label ‘Captured Tracks’. BLOOD CRIPS - The most rocking party band in Leeds by along shot; they haven’t been around for long but already people have been grabbing the mic and singing along in mental basement parties in LS4 - the newLS6. AnUpright, with a Broken Arm; one Real Loser. TWISTED - A totally rocking group-|can hear they also have an ear open to some decent garage rock. Plus, the singer really ‘gets it out’ and it’s definitely worth seeing, whether you’re a boy or agirl. BHURGEIST - Brand New band outta Sheffield, featuring a Spectral. Have one play through the songs on their Myspace and you'll hear that these dudes definitely ain’t shit. They play fuzzy, catchy, minute long hits andI’m certainly excited about seeing them play. Since forming in 2004, they have relentlessly toured through USA, UK, Europe and Australasiar. The band, inrecentdayshave _ tradedintheir explosiveenergyforamore introverted presence, treating each performance, each song and gesture as a carefully considered offering. Their sound finds simple resolution in complex rhythms, and draws melodic responses from heavy restraint. So So Modern make no secret their musical influences, being it hardcore punk, no-wave, dance, kraut-rock, free-noise or electronica. This respect goes beyond mere derivation, abandoning any sense of the kitch forhonest songwriting and intense delivery. Add an all star local lineup cue the astonishing Quack Quack, the supreme Cissy and The delightful Acutes and you have yourself an early contender for gig of the decade! The gigs in Cops and Robbers are organised on aDIY, non-profit basis and do not exist to make a profit for anyone involved.
