Both these gigs will occur in the usual place, and both require
you to RSVP- see the website for details or check C&R
nearer the time.
Inthe meantime, Raino just texted me about a potential

The Common Place’s premier not-particularly-themed
pop night returns for another crack at not being rubbish,
having pulled a bumper crowd of two people last month
because apparently most people think it’s a bad idea
going into town whenit’s -5 outside and the streets of
Leeds are kind of like the Olympic bobsleigh run if the
Olympic bobsleigh run was lined with vintage clothing
stores and branches of Greggs. Just because none of y’all
had the foresight to own a bobsleigh. | hate my generation.
Anyway - we persist, and we’re back on February 6th. £1

For the past decade Matt Valentine and Erika Elder have been
formulating an ancient-modern universe of sound from their
base deep in the Vermont woods, via their own Child of
Microtones imprint as well as prolific activity on some of
the most respected boutique labels in the world. Their
latest ‘Barn Nova’ follows two previous killer cuts on
Ecstatic Peace. They honestly slipstream peak Neil
Young-esque Americana, Grateful Dead harmonix, old
time front porch vibes, and time / space defying spectral
jams akin to Acid Mothers Temple.
Between them Alan Courtis & Aaron Moore have been part
of orcollaborated with Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Damo
Suzuki (Can), Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), Yoshimi
P-Wee (Boredoms), Chris Corsano, Michael Snow, Volcano

“syncopated rhythms and drumming around the beat;
guitar picking out strange disarrayed arpeggios and
then move seamlessly through a selection of musical
textures. There’s a bubbling bass-heavy jazz break, a
slower widescreen prog wander, stabs of angry
distortion, but all the while each pieceis a cohesive
beast with little recurring themes throughout.”
—Cath Aubergine
Hoarder Myna
“‘Rememberable Rifts’, the debut EP from progressive
Leeds 3 piece Hoarder Myna, is an immensely tight,
crisp sounding debut from another great UK band
blurring, and expanding, the definition of Math Rock.”

WEIRDO GUISE presents...
MAZES - This group stand head and shoulders above all
the shit ‘lo-fi / DIY’ hipster bands around in droves right
now. If they continue to release records to the quality of last
years debut, the ‘Bowie Knives’ 7?, thenmaybe you'll hear
their name in the same sentence as The Vaselines or The Clean.
SPECTRALS - Heavy vibing, reverb drenched songs about
chicks by a fresh-faced twenty-something and his band.
Debut LP out sometime this year on Blank Dog’s Brooklyn
based label ‘Captured Tracks’.
BLOOD CRIPS - The most rocking party band in Leeds
by along shot; they haven’t been around for long but
already people have been grabbing the mic and singing
along in mental basement parties in LS4 - the newLS6.
AnUpright, with a Broken Arm; one Real Loser.
TWISTED - A totally rocking group-|can hear
they also have an ear open to some decent garage rock.
Plus, the singer really ‘gets it out’ and it’s definitely worth
seeing, whether you’re a boy or agirl.
BHURGEIST - Brand New band outta Sheffield, featuring a
Spectral. Have one play through the songs on their
Myspace and you'll hear that these dudes definitely ain’t
shit. They play fuzzy, catchy, minute long hits andI’m
certainly excited about seeing them play.
Four pounds in. First band on JUST after 8.00pm.

So So Modern.
Since forming in 2004, they have relentlessly
toured through USA, UK, Europe and
Australasiar. The band, inrecentdayshave _

introverted presence, treating each
performance, each song and gesture as a
carefully considered offering. Their sound
finds simple resolution in complex rhythms,
and draws melodic responses from heavy
restraint. So So Modern make no secret
their musical influences, being it hardcore
punk, no-wave, dance, kraut-rock,
free-noise or electronica. This respect goes
beyond mere derivation, abandoning any
sense of the kitch forhonest songwriting
and intense delivery.
Add an all star local lineup cue the
astonishing Quack Quack, the supreme
