Dr. Steven Lomazow and
FDR's Deadly Secret
On February 16, those hardy
souls who braved a cold
evening, a bit of snow and ice,
and a threat of more snow,
which did not materialize, were
treated to a fascinating lecture
by Dr. Lomazow. The
attendance was approximately
65, and although the lecture
lasted longer than any that we
have had previously, no one left
early, and the questions and
answer period had to be
curtailed to comply with the
Library rule to vacate the
building by 9 PM.
Dr. Lomazow's book FDR's
Deadly Secret is the product of
several years of extensive
research of original documents,
many never seen before,
consultations with eminent
physicians, and a thorough
knowledge of the medical issues
relating to President Franklin D.
Roosevelt. Dr Lomazow has
revealed the extensive cover up
by the President's staff, and his

medical and political advisors,
all designed to conceal from the
public that the President was
suffering from the deadly
disease of melanoma.
Why is this important, and
can this ever happen again?
These questions were directly
confronted by Dr. Lomazow.
The answers to these questions
involve the tension between
three conflicting dictates of the
medical profession, namely a
patient's right to privacy, a
doctor's sworn duty not to reveal
a patient's medical condition
without permission, and the
public's right to know the true
condition of the President if the
medical condition could
conceivably impair him/her from
properly dealing with questions
of vital national security.
The same questions were
presented during the last years
of President Woodrow Wilson's
administration, and the news of
his severe and crippling stroke
was concealed. Interestingly,
the same medical team that
MODERATOR
worked so effectively to withhold
information about Wilson, chose
the medical team which treated
President Roosevelt, with the
same predictable results!
All of the Book Club lectures
are now being video taped and
we are endeavoring to post
them on our web site for
viewing. However, there are
some technical problems
relating to limitations on the
length of time a video can be
shown on a web site, and we
are working on solving the
problems.

Change in Plans
The Members Night originally
scheduled for March 16 has
been cancelled due to
scheduling problems. Instead
we will have a panel discussion
of Paul Fussell's entertaining
book Wartime. This is an
excellent overview of social,
economic, and political events
at home in the United States
during World War 2.
We are constantly
experimenting with different
formats, and this time we will
have a three person panel on
stage at a table who will discuss
this award winning book. Paul
Fussell has written extensively
on World War 2 and his The
Great War in Modern Memory
has been acclaimed as the best
book ever written about the First
World War. Members are
encouraged to obtain this book
also and read it. No extensive
knowledge of the battles or
geography is necessary to
thoroughly enjoy this fine book.
With respect to the
discussion of Wartime,
members are encouraged to
read this book before the
lecture. It is available in all
libraries and can be purchased
on any book web site.
Panel members who will
lead the discussion are Trina
Frankel, M.D., Joseph R.
Purcell, Esq. and William L.
Clayton. We have pictures of the
many war time propaganda
posters, American, German and
Japanese shown extensively
during the conflict, and lots of
other memorabilia which will be
shown that evening. Any
member who has any other
objects of interest is encouraged
to bring it in for display. It should
be a fun evening. We also plan
on playing some of the favorite
tunes of the era. It should bring
back memories to those who
lived during those times as well
as be informative to our younger
members.
Black History Month
As you know February is
Black History Month. Keith
Bodden, one of our members,
an officer of the local NAACP
has alerted us to an upcoming
discussion at the Bethel AME
Church 59 Spring Street
Morristown, NJ 07960. (973-
267-8912). The discussion is
entitled "Sojourner Truth, Ain't I
a Woman" [directions to the
church are easily obtainable on
Google] The discussion will be
held at 3PM Sunday February
28, 2010.
Sojourner Truth (1797-1883)
was the self-given name from
1843 of Isabella Baumfree, an
African-American abolitionist,
woman's right's activist and
former slave. The title of the
lecture is her best-known
speech delivered in 1851 at the
Ohio Women's Rights
Convention in Akron, Ohio. For

April 20. David Sears, a
Morris County resident, and
author of several books on
World War 2 will discuss At War
With the Wind, the story of the
Japanese Kamikazi fighters
during World War 2.
September 21. We will have
Johathan Gumz, distinguished
professor of History and faculty
member at West Point Military
Academy tell us about some
little know facts concerning
OPERATION OVERLORD, the
D-Day Invasion.
October 19, We will have
Thomas Fleming, author of over
40 books discuss his popular
FDR's Secret War.
North Jersey Civil War and
Revolutionary War
Roundtables.
Many of our members are
also interested in both the Civil
War and the Revolutionary War.
All meetings are held in
Morristown. Anyone interested
in additional information can

Membership
We now have 50 paid
memberships which is very
encouraging. However the list of
people on the mailing list
exceeds 150. Although we
welcome guests, we hope and
expect that those who regularly
attend will join and pay the
modest dues.
In addition several
members have made additional
contributions for which we thank
you. We should also mention
that Dr. Lomazow generously
contributed $5.00 of the price of
his book to the club, which
generated another $60.00 and
we thank him for this gesture.
