Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP share the same code base. However, Server 2003 comes with aslightly different look and feel due to different default settings. It’s quite easy to change the settings ofWindows Server 2003 to make it look and feel just like Windows XP. Just follow these simple steps:
Configuring the “Look”
First Log In as Administrator:
Disable “Manage Your Server” Pop-up
: just check “Don’t display this again”3.
Enable XP “Look” (Themes):
By default Windows Server 2003 hides the Windows XP “Luna” lookfrom the Display Properties. You just need to enable the Themes service to make this option appearin Display Properties. To do this: Click
Start > Run >
and type services.msc & Enter. Look for theThemes service > double click it > set the Startup dropdown to Automatic > Press Apply > Now youcan press Start > Click OK. Themes are now enabled and you can right click on the desktop, selectProperties > Themes > Windows XP.4.
Quick Launch for Windows Media Player 10:
Windows Media Player is shipped with WindowsServer 2003 but its hidden away in the Start menu, to enable Media Player Click
Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Windows Media Player
. You will be presented with the Welcome toWindows Media Player screen. On the same screen that lists “File Types” to be played by the mediaplayer, don't forget to use the More Options tab and click to add a Quick Launch icon so you canaccess Media Player directly from the Quick Launch area. Click Finish.5.
Perform Add/Remove Windows Components:
The Windows Server 2003 default install leaves outsome components needed for a Windows XP “look.” You get to these by going to
Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components
which launches the
“WindowsComponents Wizard” and then scrolling down to get to the needed component(s).
Add Accessories to the system:
By default, Windows Server 2003 does not install the commonWindows XP accessories such as Paint, Calculator, Word Pad, and Character Map. In thelaunched
“Windows Components Wizard,”
“Accessories and Utilities”
will be the first componentlisted. Click the “Details …” button on that window, and when the “Subcomponents ofAccessories and Utilities” window pops up, check the box next to “Accessories.”
Disable Internet Explorer Hardening:
The security features in Windows Server 2003 setsInternet Explorer to high security by default, so you won't be able to browse any sites. RemoveInternet Explorer's Enhanced Security Configuration, using the “Add/Remove WindowsComponents” Wizard and scroll down to the “Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration”item. Click on Details and uncheck both boxes. With these optional components now checked and unchecked, click “OK” and “Next>” and the
“Windows Components Wizard” then prompts you through the install and uninstall using yourWindows Server 2003 installation media.
