The Montcalm Panhandle fund is $10,000 bet-
ter off this year do to the very successful fund raiser
held at Latitudes Road House. The panhandle board
would like to extend a huge thank you to Communi-
ty First Credit Union, The Howard City DDA, Pease
Insurance Agency Inc, RC Senior Health Care LLC
and Trumpets & Dove Financial Services for under-
writing the dinner portion of the evening. The board
acknowledges all of the participant’s table sponsors
and folks that donated to the cause. The community
fund balance is nearing $76,520 which should al-
low $4,000 in grant money every year. According
to Chairman Richard Pease foundations and en-
dowments are the way to help ensure future growth
in a community, private money for parks, librar-

volunteered on Saturday night and was
happy to see many community leaders and
friends enjoying the music and having a
good time chatting with acquaintances and
dancing. As far as I could see, there was no
degradation or humiliation of women go-
ing on anywhere in that tent.
Also, last summer a pastor did come to
town and had a tent revival in the lot across
the street from White’s. No one “pitched a
fit.”
The second letter I am responding to is
the one that said that the Winter Festival
was not community related and the accu-
sation that childrenand the elderly were
not taken into consideration. There were
children and family related activities all
day long. Events included a hockey shoot,
snow painting, fort building, snowflake
shoot and a sliding hill. There was hot
cocoa and coffee at the community bon
fireprovided by the Lions Club, a pancake
breakfast to support the new skate park
and a snow mobile poker run. I hear that
next year the committee is adding frozen
chicken bowling and a fish shanty race. If
these aren’t family events, I don’t know
what is. From what I understand, the Se-
nior Center was asked to participate with
a Euchre tournament and they declined.
They could have had a band during the day
with dancing or something. Maybe offered
a place for people enjoying the festival to
come in and warm up during the day on
Saturday. They chose not to participate.
If individuals and organizations don’t
want to volunteer their time to help to
make the town a better place than others
can only do the best they can. The groups
that put on the Harvest Festival, the Winter
Festival and the Tree Lighting Ceremony
aresmall and work hard because they care
about this community. My advice is to stop
thinking bad thoughts about our town and
get busy trying to make it better.

TO THE EDITOR:
As President of the Montcalm County
Panhandle Area Chamber of Commerce,
and after hearing of the results of the event,
from Board Member Mark Stevens and Ex-
ecutive Director Marianne Shepard, at our
monthly board meeting I feel the respon-
sibility to report to the community, to say
‘thank you’ to the dozens of volunteers that
put on a really great community event.
For the first annual Winterfest there
were 41 snowmobiles, with very little snow,
that took part in a fun run. No less than 40
people were involved in a Eucher tourna-
ment. The Sliding hill had a large group of
youngsters laughing and playing. One of
the kids, I understand, is already suggest-
ing improvements for next year’s sliding
hill. The fort building at the Library was
a huge success along with the snow paint-
ing.
The “beer tent” was a hit with the adults.
Friday had approximately 200 attendees
and Saturday, I understand had another
600 people. One of the best parts of the
beer tent is that a portion of the profits will
be donated to Helping Hands. Our deep-
est thanks to Lattitudes and Miller Lite for
helping such a great cause. The final results

GMHS hosts sixth

EVENT: Grant Christian School hosted their fifth annual Daddy
Donut Day for preschool families on Thursday, Jan. 21. Besides
enjoying a good selection of donuts and a healthy glass of choco-
late milk, dads experienced the day in the life of their preschool
learner. Donut projects, feet measuring and comparing, shav-
ing faces, Bible story time, and other fun activities filled the time.
Preschoolers were treated to a special family connection when four
generations of “Frey Guys” joined the day! Great grandpa Loren
Frey, Grandpa Jack Frey, Daddy Tom Frey, and student Luke Frey
rounded out the quad.

Ordinance No. 2010-01
An ordinance to protect the public health, safety and general welfare by estab-
lishing regulations relating to the operation, control, maintenance and manage-
ment of cemeteries owned, controlled or operated by the Township of Pierson in
Montcalm County, Michigan to provide penalties for the violations of said ordi-
nance, and to repeal all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict therewith.

(c) Winter burials will be conducted from December 15th,

The new “Super Drunk” law makes it a crime to drive with a blood alcohol content of .17
or greater. Under the “Super Drunk” law a driver’s blood alcohol level of .17 means installing an
alcohol-testing ignition device in your car in order to drive. This new law is effective on Halloween,
2010.
FIRST TIME PENALTIES ARE STIFF. A one-year license modification. The first 45 days -
absolutely no driving. The Secretary of State can return the license for the next 320 days, restricted
driving, but only after an ignition device (called a BAIID) is installed. Fines go up to a maximum
of $700.00. Potential jail time is increased from 93 days to as much as 180 days. Mandatory
attendance in a one-year alcohol treatment program. A first offender who later violates the driving
restrictions, or attempts to operate a vehicle with a 0.025 blood alcohol level gets twice the
penalties. Offenders get a new 45 day period of no driving, followed by 320 days of restricted
driving with the BAIID. On a long trip the driver must test about twice every hour. If it detects an
alcohol level of greater than .025, a warning signal goes off. The device reports violators to the
monitoring agency. Repeat offender sanctions remain unchanged.
Drunk driving has just become more costly because the BAIDD costs as much as $50 to
install, more again every month to maintain, and treatment programs are not always cheap.
WILL IT STOP DRUNK DRIVERS? Our courts already have the option to require a BAIDD
as a condition of being bonded. And, drunk drivers often know to plead to a lesser offense on their
first charge if they are given the chance – impaired driving. But if pleas aren’t offered or taken,
there will be more drunk driving trials for drivers to fight the accuracy of the BAIIDs readings.
Which will end up costing the public more money. So several Michigan drunk driving attorneys
are questioning whether the Super Drunk law is Super Good for Michigan after all. Time will tell.

Pre-natal Environment
To insure that you have a healthy baby there are some important things to know before you get
pregnant and during the pregnancy. Six months prior to getting pregnant both parents should be
doing some things to prepare. Supplements high in natural Vitamin B from Alfalfa and DHA from
Omega 3 fish oil are crucial for normal brain development in the fetus.
Avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and soda pop are very important because these are
dehydrating to the system. When the body of the pregnant Mom becomes chronically dehydrated
she begins to develop Adrenal fatigue. At the third trimester, the fetal adrenal glands start working
to the point where they begin to supply Adrenal hormones to the Mom. She begins to feel really
good for the remainder of the pregnancy. After the baby is born, the mother again begins to
experience adrenal fatigue causing depression, fatigue, irritability. The baby meanwhile is now
over producing adrenaline for its little body size and begins having sleep issues, as well as heart
and gastrointestinal problems.
In his book, The Power of Sound, Dr. Joshua Leeds, gives remarkable
information on how sound and the things we say around the pregnant mom
influences the baby after the fourth month. Exposure to classical music has
been shown to enhance brain development and actually will later improve
the child’s ability to perform math and logical reasoning.
Good nutrition, natural vitamins, omega 3 fish oil, adequate sunshine, right
amount of water, and exercise are all very important for the development of
a healthy baby. A little planning and a few changes can dramatically improve
the health of your baby and greatly reduce the chances for birth defects and
other health risks.
