Dear Neil
: My sister livesalong the Texas Gulf Coast. She has an invasion of in-sects that may be leafhop- ers. When you approach thelant, the brown bugs movearound the stems where youcan’t see them. She triedspraying, but the adults ei-ther fly or jump off. Do theydamage crape myrtles andlantanas?
You’re correct - those areout of the leafhopper clan. They’re probably sharp-shooters, and your descrip-tion of their movement tohide is the one that is mostoften given for them. Spray-ing with a general-purposeinsecticide such as acephateor malathion will be best, but spray from the top of theplants, down - in a sweepingmotion. Sharpshooters aremore novelties than threatsto our plants. Aphids aremore common on crape myr-tles, and lace bugs on lanta-nas.
Dear Neil
: We have a St.ugustine lawn, and earlyeach spring a goathead-likeweed sprouts and produceswhite blooms. The burs areawful. How can they be elim-inated?
Use a pre-emergent weed-killer containing Gallery inSeptember. Almost all cool-season weeds sprout goinginto the fall so that theycan be well-established byspringtime. If you still misssome with the pre-emer-gent, you can control themafter they are growing witha broadleafed weedkillerspray containing 2,4-d inearly spring. This is thesame advice I give for con-trolling dandelions, cloverand other broadleafed win-ter and early-spring weeds. If you follow the guidelinesfor them, you’ll be on target.
Dear Neil
: We boughtour house a couple of yearsago, and it had a 12-year-old weeping willow growingnear it. It budded out earlythis spring, but a late freezekilled it back and the earlyleaves were lost. Now it’sbare and appears to be dead. The bark has peeled off thetrunk 6 inches wide and 18inches long. Should I takeit out? A friend told me theywould last a long time.
Your tree, by willow stan-dards, had a long and richlife. Their average life ex-pectancy, if you consider allthe willows that are lost tocottonwood borers at a veryearly age, is probably eightor 10 years. It’s time for anew tree. If you plant any-thing before fall, you’ll haveto hand-water it to keep itgoing all summer. Sprinklerirrigation alone will not besufficient.
Dear Neil
: My zucchini plants produce lots of flow- ers but no fruit. Why?
Two possibilities, both in- volving pollination. Whenany plant in the cucumberfamily starts to bloom, itwill produce male bloomsfirst (straight stems at-taching the flowers to the vines). Only after a couple of weeks will the female flow-ers (swollen stems that willdevelop into the fruit) startto develop. It’s nature’s wayof ensuing good pollination. However, if you do see thefemale flowers and you’restill not getting good fruitset, you have sluggish beeactivity. Do some pollinatingyourself. Pluck a male flow-er from the plant and stripits petals back to expose thepollen. Carefully daub thepollen onto the female flow-ers. Presto! You’ll be eatingzucchinis just a few dayslater.
Dear Neil
: What wouldcause the leaves of an angeltrumpet to cup under? I seeno insects. It’s almost as if the edges of the leaves havestopped growing, while thecenters continue to grow.
The cause of leaf curl isoften hard to pinpoint. The various angel trumpet plantsare rank growers, so theycan exhibit unusual growthat times. Your plant mayhave been dealt a glancingblow of broadleafed weed-killer spray from afar, or itmight be spring damage leftbehind by aphids, especiallyif it’s only the old growththat is affected. Moisturestress at a critical time, oreven hot, drying winds mayhave been responsible. I’veseen this a few times on thebrugmansias, far less oftenon daturas.
Dear Neil
: Why wouldthe tips of my tomato plantsturn brown and die?
If it’s only affecting thetips of the shoots, it’s mostlikely some type of mechani-cal injury such as hail orbreakage due to wind or thestems being bumped. Lookclosely for signs of insectdamage, and think, also, about any weedkillers thatmight have been sprayed afew days before you noticedit. If it does not get worse, and if new growth is unaf-fected, it’s of no concern.
