There are currently three active ingredients that the FDA recognizes
in Over-The-Counter drug products for the treatment of psoriasis,
seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. These ingredients are Coal Tar,
Zinc and Salicylic Acid. When looking for a topical cream, lotion or
shampoo at your local drug store if it doesn't have one of these
ingredients then it is not considered effective by the FDA as a
treatment for these skin conditions.
All three ingredients are considered exfoliants. This means they are
designed to help accelerate the bodies natural removal of dead
cells. Our bodies naturally exfoliate dead skin cells every day. In
fact, every 14 to 21 days we have a completely new layer of skin
cells at the top layer of our body. In people who suffer with
bodies natural exfoliation cannot keep up with this over production
of cells and a build up is caused in the area that will look scaly or
even like plaque.
What's the difference and why should I choose one over the other?
Since all three ingredients are considered effective by the FDA I am
going to just list the negatives that individuals have stated after
using the ingredient. Keep in mind that some people may respond
better to one ingredient over another. Even though I am listing
negatives each individual will have to determine which works best
for them.
By far the biggest complaint about this ingredient is the smell.
Many companies will try to mask the smell with a fragrance. This is
somewhat helpful, but adding a fragrance to a product can also
irritate some peoples skin. We have heard some people also claim
that tar products can sometimes be greasy and may stain your
clothes.
The use of Zinc in topical treatments has become very popular.
There are virtually no complaints about smell when using this
ingredient. However, we do hear many complaints about greasy
formulations and the possibility of the product staining the clothes.
Also, the amount of Zinc that is used in a formulation can greatly
effect how well an individual will respond to treatment using this
ingredient.
This is a beta hydroxy acid that can be found in low levels in many anti-wrinkle products that are on the market. It is virtually odorless so there are no complaints about smells when using this ingredient. Typical formulations will not be greasy and there are few complaints about products that stain clothes when using Salicylic Acid. If used at too high of a level this ingredient can be drying to the skin.
Since all three ingredients are designed to exfoliate dead cells you
will see similar results from all three ingredients. The difference
between products can be determined by the other ingredients.
After the cells have been completely exfoliated the body can be left
with red blotchy patches. The most effective way to help reduce
the redness is to provide vitamins, minerals and moisture to the
area. Common ingredients you will find include Aloe and Vitamin E.
We found a product called Dermasolve that uses a patented
technology called Ovasome Technology. The company that makes
it, L'Avenir Skin Care, says it uses whole egg nutrients in the
cream. The egg naturally contains over 70 vitamins minerals and
proteins. Used topically these can provide the skin with all the
nourishment that it needs to look normal again. From all of the
information we have seen,Dermasol ve has received 5-star reviews
from many of its customers. The company is so sure it will work for
you that they even offer a 60 day money back guarantee so there
is really no risk in trying it.
