Dear Task Force members:After reviewing my notes on the January 12, 2010, Rested Master Plan SpecialStudy (RMP SS) Task Force discussion about community input and thepossibility of creating advisory groups to provide information and comments tothe Task Force, I would like to suggest an approach for your consideration.I would like to create a subgroup of the task force to help with designingcommunication strategies, as well as opportunities for engaging the community.Let's call it a Communication/Community Engagement subcommittee. Thisgroup would be made up of task force members and invite the participation ofothers such as the representatives of Reston Association, the Greater RestonChamber of Commerce, and the Reston Town Center Association. (Thesegroups helped the Reston Metrorail Access Group provide community outreach.) I think that we should wait on appointing any additional formal groups until suchtime as we feel a given issue needs to be explored in greater depth. My understanding is that many of you thought the issues were important enoughthat they should be discussed in the context of the full task force.Robert Goudie did mention the possibility of creating a Task Force sub-committee to look at the Reston Town Center – North Government Center area, and also a group to look at community facilities and transportation improvements.Let’s discuss this further at our next meeting. When we went around the table, many of you expressed strong feelings that thetask force should be meeting as a whole and considering critical issues as acommittee of the whole, in large part because of the aggressive schedule fordeveloping recommendations for amendments to the Fairfax CountyComprehensive Plan for the transit station areas and land bays along thecorridor. There was also interest in ensuring effective community involvement and anindication that some community groups are willing to provide administrativesupport for smaller working groups. In fact, they have been meeting andproviding information to us, including briefings at the January 26 Public Meeting. It appears that the County has a limited amount of funds to engage acommunications consultant. I will work with staff and the consultant to identifyways to ensure effective community input.
