Tingkatan-tingkatan kehidupan
sosial ekonomi adalah
perbedaan yang menonjol
dalam hal kemakmuran
sejumlah negara jika
dibandingkan dengan negara
yang lain.


Oleh karena itu, berbagai

istilah / sebutan dilakukan
untuk membedakan negara
miskin dengan negara kaya.
 Misal ,


 Negara-negara yang kurang

berkecukupan secara ekonomi
diberi sebutan seperti : “belum
berkembang”, “sedang
berkembang”, atau “kurang
berkembang”.


 Adapun negara-negara
yang berkecukupan secara
ekonomi diberi sebutan “telah
berkembang” atau “maju”.
 Dua istilah lain untuk membedakan
antara negara kaya dan miskin
adalah “negara dunia ketiga” dan
“negara selatan”.


 Istilah negara dunia ketiga kali

pertama digunakan di Perancis
pada tahun 1950. Pada awal tahun
1960-an, istilah tersebut menjadi
bagian dari suatu
pengklasifikasian negara-negara
dunia menjadi 3 atas dasar utama,
yaitu dilihat dari keadaan politik
dan ekonomi.
1. Negara dunia pertama (Negara
Kapitalis / Dunia Barat),
meliputi negara-negara industri
dengan corak ekonomi pasar.

Komunis / Kubu Sosialis),
meliputi negara-negara ekonomi
yang telah terencana secara
sentral.

5.Negara dunia ketiga, meliputi
negara-negara yang lebih miskin
dan banyak diantaranya baru
merdeka dari kekuasaan
kolonial.
Selain itu, masih ada pula
istilah untuk kelompok negara
seperti : “negara selatan”
(istilah ini mulai dipakai
khususnya sejak diterbitkannya
buku “Utara Selatan: Suatu
program untuk kelangsungan
hidup”).
