 The automotive industry in India
India has been one o the world’s astest growing economies during the last ew years. However, India has still not recovered rom the eects o the ormer inward-oriented policies it ollowed until the 1990s. Economic reorms started taking placein the beginning o the 1990s when India started opening up gradually. The ques-tion is whether India can implement the required policy changes eectively and de-velop a conducive business climate or industry to grow, and thus be able to sustainthe strong rate o growth it has achieved over the past ew years.During this time there has been increasing condence in the manuacturing sector inIndia and its long term potential as a manuacturing hub. Importance o the engine-ering industry is supreme in this regard and it also plays a crucial role in the economicgrowth o the country. To understand the driving orces o India better, it is essentialto develop an understanding o prevailing undamentals in the engineering industry.In this report we provide an overview o the engineering industry in India withrelevant acts regarding the structure and size, growth rates, main challenges, trendsin international trade, research and development initiatives, as well as an indicationo uture outlook o the main segments in the engineering industry. It is a series o seven dierent reports that includes an overview o the engineering industry, theautomotive industry, the machinery and equipment industry, the electrical machi-nery industry, the automotive components industry, the electronic equipment indu-stry and the abricated metal products industry.This series o seven dierent reports has been commissioned by Tekniköretagen,the Association o Swedish Engineering Industries, to provide a detailed overviewo the Indian engineering industry covering various aspects o the main segments.It is hoped that the reports will help identiy areas o business interest or Swedishengineering companies and give the reader increased knowledge o the presentindustrial development in India.The reports have been authored by Mr. Rahul Sanyal.
